5.0 out of 5 stars Mature, mellow and marvellous....., 25 Sep 2013
This thoughtful, mature and introspective work is Elton and Bernie's best work to date. Piano to the fore, The Diving Board is innovative, grown up and crammed with delicious details ....... it demands multiple listenings. This is an artist prowling his constituency with confidence, total control and exciting aplomb. Highly recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Old sins cast dark shadows......., 29 July 2013

This review is from: The Red Road (Hardcover)
This is the first Denise Mina novel I have read....it certainly won't be the last!!
Her precision engineered plotting, divergent, believable cast and a story resonating through two decades make for a riveting, psychologically complex and socially astute journey.
Crime here is merely the glass through which Glasgow, at all levels, is explored deeply and darkly.
Highly recommended....

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, bleak and beautifully written....Le Carre at his very best!! !!, 28 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Delicate Truth (Hardcover)
Now in his eighties and still firing on all cylinders....sharp, fluid and ferocious - this is a dark tale of our present troubled times. When you can no longer "speak truth to power" the whistle blower must "speak truth about power" and therein lies the rub....for "power" as defined as the "deep secret state" will do all to protect itself. Out of this moral clash, Le Carre has crafted a brilliantly tense, twisty tale that propels the reader towards a cracking climax, full of resonance and outrage. There are no pat answers or simple solutions here.....only thought provoking fallout and sinister echoes. We are blessed to have a writer of such energy, ability, perception and relevance..... Highly recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebus is back....., 15 Nov 2012

...and in top form. Rankin delivers a cracking crime novel that sees the salty cop prowling his constituency as powerfully as before. Gritty, blackly humorous and gripping throughout, it's a pleasure to see both Rebus and Rankin resurgent.....

A must read for all interested in modern cinema in general and Clint Eastwood in particular. Vaux mines the humane themes, inherant in all he does and makes you realise why Eastwood's films are so profound, engaging and poignant. You will never see his work in the same light.....

5.0 out of 5 stars T.V Gold......, 23 Sep 2012
This review is from: Parade's End [DVD] (DVD)
Fearsomely intelligent in its conception and execution, Parade's End represents a hight point in T.V drama. The whole cast relish the superb script by Tom Stoppard which in turns is poignant, exhilarating and laugh-out-loud funny.....it is always subtle and demands total concentration from its audience. Special mention to the two leads (Cumberbach and Hall) who travel the emotional arc of the drama beautifully.....Brave productions like this, which refuse to dumb down drama are to be celebrated and rejoiced...
