This just has to be heard. Gorgeous, atmospheric and unusual. These guys are on fire. 'Samurai Hee-Haw' is spine-tingling.

2.0 out of 5 stars 2CD set presents Moscow 1990 show and an unlistenable 1982 bootleg recording, 20 Mar 2009
CD1 is 'Live In Moscow', an exciting and beautifully recorded concert. However, Eagle Rock offers a CD/DVD set that documents the Moscow shows from 1990 and so I would recommend that instead.

CD2 is 'Live in Massachusetts', a very tatty sounding bootleg, best avoided. Not even the biggest Asia fan in the world needs to hear this awful, low-fi recording.

The discs are packaged in a cardboard case. The artwork does not exactly scream Asia; I admit, I do not know the origin of the bizzare, balding redhead on the cover but I doubt it was the work of Asia's regular cover artists, latterly Rodney Matthews (originally Roger Dean). If it is, I apologise for my ignorance in advance but the artwork remains anonymous, whereas regular Asia albums are distinctive. Were the legend 'Asia' absent from the album cover, one would never guess this was their work.

The liner notes detail Asia's creation and the respective musical histories of the four founding members. Wetton of King Crimson! Palmer of ELP! Howe of Yes! And Downes of... ermmm, The Buggles! And briefly Yes, I admit. Pat Thrall however, who replaced Steve Howe for the Moscow concerts, is not mentioned anywhere!

To summarise, this is not a bad 2CD set but the Massachusetts concert sounds terrible and the Moscow show is presented better elsewhere.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bootleg nonsense, 20 Mar 2009
An abbreviated version of this recording is supplied as a part of the 2CD set titled `The Smile Has Left Your Eyes', which is where I was first subjected to this mess.

Although it documents the original Asia line-up in concert during their early years, `Live in Massachusetts' is nothing more than an average quality bootleg recording. The listener will be compelled to crank the volume so that they might actually hear the band onstage... and will be promptly deafened by the audience of Asia fans cheering.

I wonder if Asia even see a penny from the sale of these bootlegs?

The 'Live In Moscow 1990' CD/DVD set, or the 'Fantasia' reunion release, are both far more worthy purchases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pick of the 'Live In Moscow' releases, 20 Mar 2009
In all honesty, I do not listen to Asia anymore! Nonetheless, to those that continue to enjoy this music, I highly recommend this item; if you're going to buy a copy of the 'Live In Moscow' performance, this CD/DVD set from Eagle Rock is the one to have. This is the official release, or as close as it gets at least. There is a dirge of Asia bootlegs and this is one of the few live recordings I would recommend.

Asia played two sold-out performances at Moscow's 10,000-seat Olympic Stadium in November 1990. Apparently, the CD and DVD each document a different show; therefore, despite some songs appearing on both formats, the listener might appreciate subtle differences that are apparent in separate performances of one song. Geoff Downes for example, might not use the same keyboard sample that he used the previous night. And of course, there are two separate Carl Palmer drum solos! To summarise, the CD is definitely not an 'audio-only' alternative to the DVD.

Weirdly, the DVD contains a studio recording/music video of 'Prayin' 4 A Miracle' - excruciating 'text message speak' name! - a song that was recorded especially for the 'Then & Now' compilation album, released in 1990. Unusual to have such a thing appear halfway through a concert video.

The performers are original members John Wetton, Geoff Downes and Carl Palmer. In place of the remaining founder-member Steve Howe is Pat Thrall. Wetton has supplied liner notes for this release, adding to its credibility.

The recordings are of excellent quality, though I would say the CD was superior in this respect. Unlike the majority of live Asia releases you can currently buy, this is no bootleg.

DVD tracklisting: Only Time Will Tell; Sole Survivor; Baby Blue (Downes solo); Days Like These; Rendezvous; The Heat Goes On (inc. Palmer solo); Book Of Saturday; Prayin' 4 A Miracle (studio recording); Go; The Smile Has Left Your Eyes; Open Your Eyes; Heat Of The Moment.

CD listing: Time Again; Sole Survivor; Don't Cry; Downes solo; Only Time Will Tell; Rock and Roll Dream; Starless; Book Of Saturday; The Smile Has Left Your Eyes; Wildest Dreams; The Heat Goes On (inc. Palmer solo); Go; Heat Of The Moment; Open Your Eyes.
