Firstly. this is a slightly padded-out short story, not a complete novel -the Kindle version ends at just 87% of an already short timeline, and is extended with a pointless extract from some other book - to me that's a publishing con trick that left a bemused and soured reader. Me.
The story setting- the near-future dystopia is wholly believable but 2nd-hand with nothing particularly insightful, and no originality. Yep, teenage chavs will be rude to people in the street, global warming is coming, and it will be hot, and, and .. so what?
Characters - there aren't really any to speak of - very 2-D, even our protagonists - I pictured Cameron Diaz and Action man to make it more interesting.
Now, the actual plot - lots of potential but - BUT - but a little over halfway you get hit by the - ooer, we're in for a dramatic twist in the plot - think of Fight Club, 6th Sense - and I spent the rest hoping I was wrong and JS would blow me away - how can you blame me, all those 5 star ratings and the A.C. Clark thing and all ... wrong.
Obvious, unoriginal, and not particularly well executed - kinda like a slow leak from a flaccid baloon, as opposed to a BANG!

On the plus side, the first half of the story creates an almost hypnotic, albeit depressing, compulsion to complete - angsty, a bit Kafka, Penal Colony variety. JS has promise but a ways to go yet.
I cannot recommend this book - I read 5 of the A.C. Clarke short-listed novels last year and was amazed by them all - this is not in the same league. Shut me up already.

I love his books
Have read them all
This is poorly edited and 4 times too long - i cannot recommend except in the manner that somone might buy early demo tapes
Still, it is Beckett and has moments of cleverness and social insight

GN writes a simple 'honest' account of his life. He's not the sharpest tool in the box and his songs are the 'Ringo' equivalents for CSN.
It's hard to believe he dated Joni - must've been Anglophilia, or good weed n coke - bit of all 3?
I enjoyed and read thru to the end.
The single, consistent annoyance is the unfettered vaniyy of the man - hence 3 stars.

Shift: (Wool Trilogy 2)

5.0 out of 5 stars Intensely brilliant, 2 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wool is 4 stars
Shift takes it to anoher level, much dsrker, really quite painful, psychological.
Cannot spoil so say no more.
Book 3 has a lot to do to sustain the intensity and brilliance attained in Shift.

A slow-paced drift through intensely personal thoughts and amazing descriptions of nature (of the wild and of the wild man).
I rate this as one of the best books I have EVER read.

I cannot say how much I loved this book - it is incredibly funny in places - actually, throughout - and simultaneously really bloody sad.
Edgy from the start.
Epic.
What a movie this would make.
Just read it - cannot describe.

I'll be brief
I read a lot, CB is my current fave and I'm gutted I've read all his works, consumed in a couple weeks
The Londoner in my redonates with his work
The short stories show so much promise
Almost didn't reed Eden cos had read the short version and couldn't see where it could go - but hunger for brilliance prevailed, thank Tom's Diick and Harry's.
The story recap via panto is shdkespearean genius.
Nope, no more to say, just read it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Setup nightmare, but worth it in the end, 26 Jan 2013

Warning: this is not plug n play - it took my several attempts and lotsa googlin' to find a solution - the simple 'press button' did not work and judging from the online comments, this is all too common. There is a manual set-up but do not attempt the one descibed in the booklet, as this is insane. The amazon review by p.s.briggs has instructions that worked for me - roughly:
plug it in and wait till the light goes solid yellow
get a mobile device (ipod i used) and in wifi settings look for repeater
connect to repeater and follow the instructions on your mobile device (basically, it'll ask you to onnect to your router and put in the router password - bthomehub iuse).
Kaboom - router in attic and repeater in kitchen - i've gone from no signal in kitchen to all 4 bars - lux!
Gawd knows why BT and others don't offer repeaters as part of the service ...
