4.0 out of 5 stars Easy and enjoyable if not very challenging, 10 July 2014

I liked the idea of this book and bought it on the basis of reviews and publicity. I did not think it as brilliant as others think it, but it was an enjoyable easy read; not very challenging. I liked the songs as they did contribute to the narrative and brought a different dimension to the book. It was clearly very well researched and as a result the characters are believable, if irritating, and none likeable. It gave an insight into a time and place full of colour, affectation and struggle to make good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. Great concept, 10 July 2014

Brilliant. Great concept, written with huge insight and compassion. Beautifully crafted writing. Funny with pathos and believable, engaging characters. The "twists" were predictable but satisfyingly laid out. Loved the fact that the 'baddy' was not demonised and in fact presented as a three dimensional figure. Dialogue was witty, snappy and real, adding to the depth of the story and used well as a device to take the reader through the narrative. Want to read more about Jonathon Fairfax's exploits.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 10 July 2014

I was intrigued by the concept and thought it could provide lost of twists and intrigue, but the reality is just dull! It is really badly written, the plot is very drawn out and keeps explaining itself, and the characters do not draw you in. The language is clunky, the love scenes cringe making, and the dialogue is not how people talk. Perhaps this is because of the translation from Spanish, but even so...I was hugely disappointed and am struggling to finish it. I will not be buying the rest of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, engaging and satisfying, 21 Jan 2013

Life of Pi is a well written and engaging novel. It stretches the imagination whilst not being too preposterous. I'm not sure that it brings you to God as claimed, but it does raise interesting questions about the compatibility of different faiths. There is drama, humour, quirkiness, sadness, tension, and truths contained within the story. I found it very satisfying - even the first section that most people seem to find disappointing was enjoyable, setting the character up well for the main event on the lifeboat.
