Dead Men's Bones: Inspector McLean 4 (Inspector Mclean Mystery)
Dead Men's Bones: Inspector McLean 4 (Inspector Mclean Mystery)
Price: £3.66

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 27 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Really atmospheric, and with an underlying tension. The writing makes the arcane nature of the plot wholly believable,a$ I found myself drawn into speculation as to what the supernatural force was...in a police procedural novel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent start, looking forward to the next one, 6 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Two interesting characters as the investigating team, with plenty of scope to develop their characters. The ending became obvious slightly early for me, but that didn't affect my enjoyment of the book much at all. After losing a few of my favourite authors recently, it's nice to find a new one with the potential to feed my habit of crime fiction into the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant ending that evokes a watershed in the history of many., 26 Jan. 2015

This review is from: Sweet Sorrow (Kindle Edition)
Marvellously atmospheric, and a greater depth if character for the two main characters than ever before. I hope there will be mire, but fear that the war may have stopped this, as it did so much if it be the last, then thanks for the enjoyment!

5.0 out of 5 stars a re-read on Kindle...still outstanding writing!!, 4 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent example of the detective genre, beautifully written and redolent with the atmosphere of the dreaming spires. I have read every one of them, and each has transfixed me with the eloquence of the writing and the depiction of the characters.

Excellent first novel in a series I have followed. I repurchased as a Kindle book to re-read, having bought originally as a paperback, aft which I have followed the entire series.

4.0 out of 5 stars good start, and plenty of unresolved questions, 30 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I liked the book, although there were some passages that were slightly slow-moving, but there were intriguing and beguiling plot lines and character developments within the "delays". The solution was not obvious to me until late in the book, which, for me, is always a positive, and the characters maintained their integrity of purpose throughout, without revealing the perpetrator.. An excellent start, and I look forward to Inspector McClennan's 2nd case.

Gallows View (An Inspector Banks Mystery Book 1)
Gallows View (An Inspector Banks Mystery Book 1)
Price: £4.75

4.0 out of 5 stars really good start to what is a fabulous series, 21 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This time, the detective has no major flaws, but has idiosyncrasies, such as his temporary liking for opera ( a Morse influence, perhaps?). The hero comes across as a fairly normal bloke, doing an abnormally demanding job, and the story examines some of the conflicts of interest that challenge real people in that job regularly. Well-written and fast-moving, this is an author to cherish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another superbly atmospheric whodunit, with an enthral long twist ..., 29 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another superbly atmospheric whodunit, with an enthral long twist at the end. This series continues to improve, and the author impresses me in the novelty factor of the home life of the main character, and the development of the characters through the series

Boring, and with little happening. Didn't engage me at all.

The Hangman's Song: Inspector McLean 3 (Inspector Mclean Mystery)
The Hangman's Song: Inspector McLean 3 (Inspector Mclean Mystery)
Price: £3.79

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating and plausible - a new take on detective fiction, 16 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read the first two books, I was expecting developments of the characters and got them in abundance, and also subtle form. The concept is intriguing - a detective with supernatural powers not in the superhero sense, but in a muddled and vulnerable sense. Excellent writing again from James Oswald, and a story that shows great imagination. Looking forward to the next one.
