Milling: A Complete Course (Workshop Practice)
Milling: A Complete Course (Workshop Practice)
by Harold Hall
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.57

4.0 out of 5 stars Rapid progress for a beginner, 8 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very useful guide for the beginner but moves very quickly from basic principles & simple accessories to the machining & assembly of quite complicated tools. Clear explanations are given with good quality photos to illustrate various techniques & correct mounting of workpieces. By the end of the course I would hope to have a sound grasp of milling. If not, it will be down to me not the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful., 8 Nov 2013

Mr Don's enthusiasm for his subject infuses this series but in his own quiet, understated way so the real stars are the gardens, not the presenter. Some of the gardens may seem bizarre but his deep understanding and passionate narrative is both informative and moving as he explains why they are true works of art. A landmark in the genre!

3.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - it you like maths!, 8 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very comprehensive treatise going far beyond the needs of this particular beginner. I enjoyed the detailed maths dealing with metric/imperial conversion & calculating change gear selection depending on leadscrew type; very useful if you have a metric lathe but restore imperial machinery, or vice-versa. Chapters dealing with general principles, tools & practicalities are excellent, explaining in detail the relative merits of different techniques. The mathematical complexity in more advanced work was daunting to say the least but if you have a passion for - or a particularly difficult problem with - screw-cutting, this is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good supplement to more basic guides, 8 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A comprehensive guide to workholding. Clear explanations though some of the photographs are dark. Tubal Cain has an engaging style which makes the technical aspects more accessible than in other books in this series. A good supplement to basic guides and easy for a beginner to understand.

Basic Lathework (Workshop Practice)
Basic Lathework (Workshop Practice)
by Stan Bray
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.57

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful guide., 8 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a beginner I struggled with some of the terminology but stuck at it, re-reading it as a textbook & highlighting the essential sections in each chapter. This has been well worth the effort as my understanding of lathe operation is much improved. Mr Bray's grammar & punctuation are, let us say, individual but he is an engineer not an English teacher. Overall, a useful guide for a beginner.
