5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on fatherhood, 24 Feb 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm well in to my fatherhood journey now (well a year, it's just felt longer), and got given this book. Wish I had it before my son was born.

The book covers from hospital to 3 years old, generally arranged into 3 month slots.

Each section has sub headings of areas of interest - factual information, accompanied by a chatty, amusing narrative about that particular age category. Having read year 1's advice, after I had actually lived through it, I found it excellent. Really covers all the facts, and feelings that you have - all the info you need, without having to wade through some of the weightier baby tomes.

Each section also contains a couple of sentences from a group of fathers with a variety of thoughts and tips - again, very useful, and so many summed up the way I thought at that time.

Although I'll have to wait a few years to see if the rest of the book is as accurate, I feel it's an excellent reference guide, witty, informative, and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent bluteooth speakerphone, 19 Feb 2012

very impressed with this. Easy to install, unobstrusive metal clip goes over the sun visor, and uses magnets to connect to the receiver. Only took a minute or 2 to setup, and worked immediately. Sound is clear (both ways), and just works perfectly. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent monitor, 16 Feb 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Picked this up as it had a few features that our main monitor (the excellent Angelcare AC401 Baby Movement Sensor Pad and Sound Monitor doesn't have, and thought it would be useful for travelling.

Been very impressed with it. Sound is clear, range is good too. Both items feel solid and well made, and there is a bag included for travelling. The mic unit is fairly bulky, but it does have a few extra features that make it worthwhile.

In particular, the useful features were the sound and light show. Our son has had several periods where his sleeping is quite poor, and often difficult to get him back to sleep in the middle of the night, while trying to avoiding too much rocking or feeding.

This worked a treat on holiday, a couple of times he woke up, and having the bird noises coupled with some lights was enough to soothe him back down to sleep. and if you're sharing a room, it's not too disruptive to your own sleep.

In summary, good, solid, useful baby monitor.

Pretty handy plug to have. use mine all the time to charge my various USB devices. It's normal plug sized, fairly light, but doesn't feel to flimsy.

Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you have the usual array of items to charge up.

Letters from the End of the World: A Firsthand Account of the Bombing of Hiroshima
Letters from the End of the World: A Firsthand Account of the Bombing of Hiroshima
by Toyofumi Ogura
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and thoughtful - amazing read, 7 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not quite sure how I came across this book, but thought it seemed interesting to get a first hand account of actually being in an atomic bombing.

I wasn't disappointed. The book is written as a series of posthumous letters by Mr Ogura to his deceased wife, who died around a week after the blast. He records events from the moment of the bombing to a couple of weeks afterwards.

He does an excellent job of capturing the disorientation of the people he meets, the panic and ignorance of people of what had just befallen them.
Some of the stories are horrific, the terrible fate that befall so many of those who survived the initial explosion, trapped in their ruined and burning houses.

There is some great description of a city in ruins, and some brilliant observations (given the stress he must have been under), about the way the bomb had effected various structures.

The final section of the book is devoted to the heart rending death of his wife - succumbing to radiation sickness - an illness that baffled so many at the time, unsure why they were dying with relatively minor injuries.

All in all, an incredible book - Mr Ogura just comes across as an ordinary person caught up in horrific, exceptional circumstances - no different from the citizens of any country that could have befallen this awful fate - driven to the brink of destruction by a government he does not support but can do nothing about...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, useful screen, 25 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I got this for an Early 2011 MacBook Pro. The screen is 15", but for some reason it doesn't seem to be a standard size, and I had previously bought a 15.6" filter, that was too short. Fortunately Hypertec were great at sending a replacement.

For this model of Mac, I had to trim the top and sides every so slightly. This is easily done with a pair of scissors, to give it a perfect fit.

There are either long or short tabs to hold it in place - I used both, long towards the bottom of the screen, and the short tabs to hold it close at top. I disagree with another reviewers who said tabs are cheap looking. I found them barely noticeable, and there has to be some way to keep the screen in place!

As for the functionality of the screen, it's perfect. The viewing angle is well restricted, you can easily see anything when sitting directly in front of it. The brightness of the screen is reduced slightly, but not so much that it's a problem.

In summary, a great product, which will see lots of use if you're working in environments where you like a bit of privacy.

Kit USB Sim Reader

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job for a good price, 25 Nov 2011

Got this to read some numbers off an old Vodafone Sagem phone, which was refusing to bluetooth the numbers to any other device.

My first device came along with a cracked CD. There is no website to download the software or drivers, so I had to return the item, and I received a prompt replacement.

Main annoyance was a mini-CD - why these awful things are still kicking about, I don't know - but they don't work with any slot loading computer.

The software is also PC only, it cannot be used on Mac.

Once I dug out an old PC, with a proper CD drive, the item worked brilliantly. Plugged in with minimal fuss, I exported all my contacts to Excel format. You can also take off the SMS message too, which was useful.

In summary - it's a product which looks and feels very cheap - but who cares, it does the job, and it's hard to argue with the functionality at that price point.

I got this to connect my 2011 macbook pro to my monitor using it's DVI connector. Have seen quite a few connectors around, but they always seem to be quite expensive for what they are.

I went for this one, and delighted with it. no hassle, simply plugged in to the monitor and laptop, no additional configuration was required, the monitor picked up the display perfectly.

In summary, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun toy, 24 Oct 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
thought this looked great fun, and thankfully my 9 month old agrees.

Build quality is excellent, has a nice solid feel to the toy. It's nice and colourful, and the balls are well colour co-ordinated with the toy itself.

Another reviewer might have a pop that the balls could pop slightly higher, but I'm not sure how that would work with the way they go back into the toy, and get fired through again. think you would have to make the ears, which acting as the landing pad, too big and unwieldy.

And not having so much force is ideal for us, as our wee boy loves push the balls back down the elephant's trunk.

Seems perfect for our 9 month old. He often is a bit lazy when it comes to sitting up - but this holds his attention so well that he was so happy to sit for ages playing.

our friends 2 year old also throughly enjoyed playing with it, so it seems to be span a range of ages.

In summary - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality playpen, 14 Oct 2011

Got this because thought it would be very useful to have somewhere the wee boy could be put safely while quickly doing something else, but didn't really want one of these tiny, cage like play pens.

This fits the bill perfectly. It covers a very large area - I could've gone for the model down, as didn't use 2 of the panels.

The quality of the wood is excellent, feels good enough that it won't splinter or break easily.

Assembly is pretty easy. 2 allen keys are provided, each section is placed together, screwed in, a wooden strut is placed over the screw, and tightened at the top. No loose metal fixing for young ones to get at, but sturdy enough to take a battering.

In summary, very impressive, and highly recommended.
