5.0 out of 5 stars Another Hyperion Triumph, 21 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Mac Cunn is a must underplayed composer and should rank among the best known. In particular the Land of the Mountain and the Flood is particularly good on this CD. I bought this particular CD because in the past any Hyperion purchase made by me have been a pleasure to listen to in terms of clarity, balance and overall recording quality. I could not recommend this highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finest performance of Allegri, 30 May 2010
This review is from: Allegri: Miserere (Audio CD)
The Allegri Miserere is just perfect. The splitting of the choir into two locations makes one feel like one is there listening to a live performance. The soloist just soars to the top notes where so many other recordings have an unfortunate glissando to some extent. The location was well chosen as the acoustic is amazing for this piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an amazing cd, 8 Mar. 2010
I have been searching for this particular cd for about ten years. Thank you Amazon!

The works that are most captivating are the Bridge and the Bax.

The quality of the recording is flawless and, in my opinion, Vernon Handley was one of the greatest conductors ever. He certainly has the Ulster Orchestra in top form here.

One may criticise somebody orchestrating another's work (as is the case with the Bax), but from the opening, who could not be totally carried away by the work? It's one of those pieces that just draws you in.

This is a must for any collector, top quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars An artist true to the music, 19 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Fantasie (Audio CD)
When you hear a soloist live, it sparks an interest in their musical careers. Such was my own experience having heard Nicola performing live twice in Ireland (Mendelssohn and Sibelius Concerti). I therefore made it my business to buy her three CDs and was delighted to purchase this fourth one recently.
In both her live performances and in these recordings, I feel that the music is Nicola's primary reward rather than financial gain, the opposite so often being the case with other performers.
Her playing is warm, true and full of love for each piece she plays. Reading the CD sleeve, one can see the amount of research and thought put into these recordings, before finally putting her own personality into each piece. The CD would appeal to both the serious collector and the beginner.
The only thing preventing a five star rating here is that it is slightly disappointing to find repeats from her earlier CDs.
Difficult to pick a favourite track but I would go for the Vocalise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection In Every Sense, 19 Sept. 2009
Sir Adrian Boult is an amazing interpreter of Elgar. The whole CD is amazing but the Pomp and Circumstance Marches steal the show here. It is seldom that a perfect performance and a perfect standard of recording come together but it happens here. Listen in particular to the fourth march and no other recording will ever sound the same again. This is truly something really special to listen to. A must for any collector.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Mendelssohn, buy this., 7 Sept. 2009
The performance of the 1st Piano Concerto should not be missed if you are a mendelssohn fan. The quality of both recording and performance are superb.
