3.0 out of 5 stars The Man In The Shop Window, 27 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I used to love Harry Worth when I was growing up. To see him do the "star-jump" effect in the shop window on the opening credits was a treat in itself and having recently acquired over 50 classic Harry Worth TV and radio shows, I needed to know more about the man. Roy Baines' book is rather thin, both physically and on content. I learned precious little about the man behind the man on the screen that I didn't already know. About half the meagre volume is taken up with lists of TV episodes, transmission dates and subtitles, even more pages are devoted to reproducing his ventriloquist and basic stand-up routines, leaving precious little room to tell his story. Disappointing, but until someone such as Mark Radcliffe, a huge Harry Worth devotee, writes the definitive story of this great but almost-forgotten star, then this will, sadly, have to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as ever., 27 Feb 2013

This review is from: Lost In You (Audio CD)
Petula clark is back with a brand new studio album, containing an eclectic mix of old and new songs, including the title track, Lost In You, through a haunting rendition of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy and a 21st century reworking of her most enduring hit, Downtown She still has a fantastic voice and remains one of our most consummately-professional stars. It is almost unbelievable that she is 80 years old! I love everything about this album. I would recommend it to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Way To Relive London 2012, 29 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The BBC has delivered a comprehensive DVD package covering the greatest Modern Olympiad ever - London 2012. As well as being able to enjoy in full the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, there are literally hundreds of memorable highlights from 15 days of top-quality sport crammed into 15 hours of fabulous entertainment. This is the sort of thing the BBC can still do better than any other broadcaster in the world and I can thoroughly recommend this terrific box-set.

The Day Alma Cogan Came to Town and Other Stories
The Day Alma Cogan Came to Town and Other Stories
by Peter Sheldon
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Collection., 14 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Day Alma Cogan Came To Town And Other Stories is a collection of short stories which illustrate how a wide range of events have affected people from the Swindon area over a good period of years. Pete Sheldon has included short tales covering many aspects of peoples' everyday lives in years gone by, and this in iteslf makes it a fascinating social document. The stories are many and varied and they are not all star-based, though there are several such inclusions in the book, Alma Cogan being by far the biggest star to make an appearance, hence the book's title. I bought the book primarily for the Alma Cogan story, as first-hand accounts of this marvellous entertainer from the persepective of the fan (as opposed to that of the celebrity friends) are rare, and it is, indeed, a great write-up, but all the other stories are equally-fascinating and together, make a great read.
