It does what it said it would do. No problems as you you wouldn't expect as it's a standard tool.

A literal romp through the most exciting period in French cultural life and history, actually if not Europe or the world. it seemed like a time that Paris was stuffed full of the great and the infamous. Painters, thinkers, artists, chancers and losers.
His description of Gertrude Stein being like "the turret of a tank turning" is priceless. Makes a nice change from the breathless adortation of her that seems to be all anyone else is capable of.
I loved his youth, his irreverence, iresponsibility, delight and ability to record an event so objectively, amusingly and unforgetabley. Unlike my spelling.
Read it if you want to the real skinny on what was happening in Paris behind the scene. Egos, silliness, drunkeness, love, giving everything a go because you are young and don't really care.....bliss.

Read this instead of starting with the previous book. "Divided Loyalties?"
Beautiful, intelligent writing. Not just the plot, but the personalities are wonderfully complete full of the difficulties that must have made day to day life so difficult at this particular period of history.
There is not ust the pace of the crime story being told, but the flavour of the german occupation taints everything with another level of syuspense, fear.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a newbie, 12 Jun 2013

I found this short book deeply absorbing. For someone new to philosophy, the book mapped out for me the dynasties involved in this discipline. It took me through ideas that are seemingly difficult at a glance but upon examination are beautifully pieced together in attempt to reach a clearer understanding of ourselves and life itself.
Thomas Aquinas is revealed as a hugely important milestone in this process and so much has flowed from him down through time.
This book would be invaluable to anyone interested in exploring philosophy but were too scared to ask.

Beautiful cotton material, generously cut. I bought ,radium and it is a bit too flown. Good strong colour soft duck egg blue background strong pinky red flowers. Lovely retro feel and I shall spend hours in it rather than a nasty acrylic infantile onesie. I do draw the line at the shops too

2.0 out of 5 stars Sentimental and biased, 8 Jun 2012

Russia is my passion and in particular this period of time, pre revolution amongst the czars court and this book was an immediate draw to my. Rasputin is a victim of propaganda from both sides bolshevik and royalist besmirching his memory was a national past time. However, a much more academic and objective method could have turned the tone of this book from sentimental apologist for a family member. Rasputins place at the centre of such a milieu is a golden opportunity to consider how he operated and how he was eventually betrayed/ liquidated. If the piece was objective enough the reader should be brought to that conclusion but it isn't so we are led down a cul de sac with Rasputins martydom at the end of it, spot lit and tragic rather than perhaps the much more convoluted and byzantine story it actually is.

It is too biased to be of any use other than a memoir of sorts, though the feel from the author is that it is an academic piece of research created to refute other historical research. It doesn't actually achieve that, it is too personal and full of personal pain and memory.

Interesting nonetheless but fails to achieve what it set out to do. Writing could not hope to encompass the subject it set out to cover.

1.0 out of 5 stars could have been so much, 8 Jun 2012

The title of this book caught my eye and I was very excited at the prospect of a novel set in an epoch of french history that is not often written about. Imagine my disappointment when only 2 chapters in I lost the will to care or wonder about any of it. There was something so very stilted in the pages. Descriptions of Paris that should have bounced off the page sort of sat there droopy and lifeless. We all know poo was integral part of life some centuries ago, thats a given, but bring those streets to life. By the time the protaginists had found the corpse, I was not interested.
This book should have been made for me but somehow never managed to grab me.
