5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected, Brilliant, 22 Dec 2013

In my opinion, this is one of the best anime series that I've ever seen. The beginning of Stein's Gate does not prepare you for the intensity of the series as it develops. It has character development to rival Moribito, humour, emotional complexity and nuance, and an amazingly constructed storyline featuring time travel.

This is not a series for fan-service or combat, but to the characters and the interplay between them. Part 1 establishes them, Part 2 really makes you care, even if you think the protagonist seems like an egocentric idiot at the start.

Parts of this series are quite dark, not so much in terms of graphic violence, but emotionally - as such it's worth being aware of the rating.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to the series, 13 Nov 2013

In this book, a lot of blanks are filled in from the past of Locke, and the character of Sabetha is finally introduced in the flesh. With all of this, the book is perhaps not as enjoyable as the earlier ones, because I think the tale in the present isn't as well fleshed out due to the lengthy back story interludes.

A good book in the series, but mostly for those already invested in the characters and wanting to learn more about them.

It's cheap, portable and does a decent job at transcribing hand written/drawn notes and diagrams. Good value for money for students taking notes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short, not very definitive, 29 Sep 2013

As noted in some other reviews, this book is very short. It does give you an installation guide to various common services like Apache, but I don't think it does a very good job of explaining the details of the differences between Centos and other distributions (it does cover some high level differences).

I had been hoping for a guide that would give me all the tools that I need to set up, configure, secure, debug and run CentOS in production, and it doesn't seem to be that.

5.0 out of 5 stars What if there are no heroes?, 29 Sep 2013

This is another excellent book from Brandon Sanderson, as always, set in an interesting universe populated by multi-dimensional characters. It's perhaps short in comparison to other books, but it feels like the right length.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, 29 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fractale [DvD] (DVD)
Fractale is the augmented reality that almost everyone is now dependent upon, and it's slowly failing. With Fractale, there is no war, no hunger and no need to work. Clain is a boy with a love of antiques, and no digital "doppel" who must decide if he wants to try and save it, or destroy it for what it does to our humanity.

Although this series is quite confusing for the first few episodes, it's a fun examination of if being "connected" disconnects us from others, and if becoming too dependent on technology leads to us being reliant on it and stops us from striving. Probably deserves to be seen twice to absorb properly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for gaming, but not exceptional., 1 July 2013

I bought these headphones looking for a good balance of comfort, sound quality and a good integrated microphone. Although the pads are relatively large and soft, they still sit on top of my ears (unlike my acoustic headphones) and I find it uncomfortable to wear them for extended periods. The integrated microphone is good, although the attachment that keeps it in place and out of the way when you're not using it has a tendency to pop free.

The extension which splits the dual microphone and headphone jack is appreciated, allowing the headphones to be used on newer sockets and older, separate mic/out jacks. No complaints on the sound quality for gaming.

I continue to look for the perfect set of headphones that can live up to what I want, but these are a solid choice for gaming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing tale of characters and culture, 1 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Shogun (Kindle Edition)
Shogun is incredibly well written to present the gulf in culture and language that the protagonist faces when he becomes essentially marooned on a foreign, island almost completely unknown to the British / Dutch, which is being exclusively exploited by the Portuguese.

Surrounded by enemies and those who would use him for purposes he doesn't understand, he must learn to survive and navigate friendships and relationships with people who will kill him if he outlives his usefulness to them, or may betray him to their other loyalties.

Once it gets going, a gripping read through to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly character driven, 18 Jun 2013

This review is from: Moribito Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Moribito is a standout anime series for me because of how highly character driven it is. You should not go to this series expecting many fights, because there are multiple episodes that focus on things like the history of the characters or developing the relationships.

It is a rather excellent series with great animation, that is appropriate to watch with younger viewers.

I've had most of the kindle versions so far with their official covers, and this is my favourite cover. It's stylish, fits securely and causes the paperwhite to switch off as soon as you close it, with easy access to the charging socket at the bottom.
