How is this guy not better known? Maybe the music is somewhat thematic, based on 70s/80s singer-songwriter formulae. Maybe the lyrics are too lateral? For me these are strengths; the poetry of Red Weather and Sylvia Plath's Lullaby are particularly beautiful taken as a kind of stream of consciousness with classy rhythmic use of rhyming. Easter Morning is another stand out track but really all tracks are pretty solid. A fellow Welshman too (look out another compatriot Georgia Ruth).

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just the music but the man, 2 Mar 2013

This is a remarkable documentary which reveals Tom Petty as a dominant, driven individual realising his dream and driving forward throughout his life to achieve continuing artistic heights. His determination shines through and whilst there is a ruthless edge and a single mindedness, his collective ethos is reflected in the development of the Heartbreakers into a great rock and roll band. Never shy to abandon apparently close friends, he is paradoxically remarkably loyal to others such as Mike Campbell, presumably because they are compatible with his continuing dreams. The production and direction is superb and the music speaks for itself. If you have even a vague interest in Tom Petty's music or just like a few of his songs then this documentary is a must watch and will convert you to the extensive oeuvre of his long career. Finally the DVD of the concert in Gainsville is just gripping and shows how durable he and the band are. His voice is still as crisp and melodious as ever and the concert showcases the spectrum of great rock tunes that he has written, from the adrenaline rush of American Girls to the exquisite beauty of Insider (with Stevie Nicks). There are very few items on Amazon that have 20 reviews all 5 star; there is no doubt that this is thoroughly deserved.

2.0 out of 5 stars Narrow sphere of interest but engagingly written, 12 Aug 2012

I rarely abandon a book. Having battled to about half way i started skimming then gave up. The narrative is engaging and the writing of high quality. However the subject is of limited interest to the general reader and it amazes me that this book has been so popular. In addition, although there is evidently a modicum of primary source material available to the author I found myself questioning many of the descriptive sections as probably pure speculation. How can he be sure that the Ephrussi children played with the netsuke in their mothers boudoir? In fact the majority of the personalisation sections describing family life read like an attempt to create a novel within a framework of historical facts. This just did not work for me. Not having any idea of the content other than the subject matter of the netsuke, i was very disappointed about the lack of history of the making of the netsuke themselves which is only paid lip service to early in the book. Perhaps one of my problems is that i have rad this book sandwiched between two of Lawrence Durrel's island trilogy. His prose and ability to capture the people and culture of his subject island are second to none, and alas for all of his qualities Edmund de Waal fails to reach anywhere near these heights in the half of his book that i managed. Sorry.

Also had a poor experience after less than 12 months usage. Water leaked into mechanism but after drying out it worked again. Thee months later water leaked into mechanism corroding everything and stopped working. Seal was definitely intact. A poor quality product.

4.0 out of 5 stars New direction...and how!, 20 Mar 2009

The foray into the vocal dimension is a remarkable success. Wendy Lewis's relatively mainstream indie vocals complement the off beat instrumental style so familiar to Bad Plus regulars and moulds the songs into a melodic discipline that is more accessible than that of the trio alone. This will open The Bad Plus to a new audience. Not familiar with many of the originals, I find the covers to be surprisingly similar to many of the originals (Radio Cure, Barracuda). Although the first few listenings make firm favourites like Lithium challenging, familiarity breeds "content", as is so often the case. This album is best reviewed after many listenings but is genuinely a marvellous achievement.
