1.0 out of 5 stars Cheeky!, 18 Jun. 2016
A really clever try-on! If you have an internet connection to buy and download this "book" (list - incomplete), then you can connect to a listings website, the author's own website, or even Wikipedia (which, contrary to reputation, can be surprisingly accurate on some things) to see the bibliography free.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely card, shame about the packaging, 9 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Yes, this is lovely smooth paper - I have no quibble about the paper. Unfortunately the packaging was inadequate - not enough padding around the two packs of paper - with the result that the packets were torn and the corners of an entire pack of 250 sheets crumpled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Bertie!, 15 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm always anxious to read about Bertie, and here we have a slice of Bertie actually enjoying himself with his Granny in the absence of his awful mother Irene. All the other locals are here too - Matthew, Elspeth and the triplets, Pat and her father, Big Lou - and now Hettie too - Angus, Domenica and Cyril, and the appalling Bruce. And now we've got a real cliff-hanger in the shape of the returned Irene. What will happen? How I wish something really awful would happen to her!

5.0 out of 5 stars How they used to live, 14 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm obsessed by Iceland and all things Icelandic, and this book was a fantastic description of the lives of Icelanders up until not too long ago. I found it incredibly sad that if a farmer died, the family was forcibly split up, even if the widow was capable of carrying on by herself, with the widow and children sent on their own to live with other families, supported by the District, and the expense accrued as a debt which the widow could never pay off because women were not paid. The book highlights how tough people had to be to survive in the harsh conditions against which there was little defence, and shows why the graveyards are full of people in their 90s and even 100s - survival of the fittest in action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elves ..., 14 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love Iceland and the stories of the Hidden People (the huldufólk), and I thoroughly enjoyed Alda's book. Stories of the elves who live in boulders and inside hillocks and occasionally mix with human folk, and how some of the stories have come into being as warnings. (I hope Alda hasn't upset the huldufólk that she doesn't believe in!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, bad ..., 5 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent book, but the edition is appallingly badly scanned and rendered. There are so many instances of "dear" instead of "clear", "radier" instead of "rather", and Peter (who's Peter?) - oh, Pater! You'd think somebody would check these things, but apparently not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great printer, but ..., 10 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love Canon printers and this is a good one, but there are a few niggles. The paper tray could do with being bigger - paper runs out far too quickly - and it takes ages to turn itself off after you press the Off button (well, it's not really a button, it's a place on the casing), and if you switch it off at the mains before it's turned itself off properly it tells you off next time you turn it on. I've had trouble getting it to communicate via wi-fi without my router going offline with, say, my laptop. Ink consumption isn't as economical as my last Canon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stupid camera pocket, 18 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'd advise anyone who buys this to carefully pull out, cut off and throw away the camera pocket, which is too small for most modern phones, even without a phone cover on. If you could get a phone in it, the pocket would bounce around as you walk. The front mesh pocket is OK for keeping things like tickets, but not cash or cards as you can see through the mesh. It's a shame it doesn't have a zipped pocket on the back against the body for extra security for something like a passport. Other than that it's a decent bum bag.

Reckless
Reckless

1.0 out of 5 stars Should have been translated into English!, 18 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Reckless (Kindle Edition)
This is the first Andrew Gross book I've read, and it'll be the last. For me the main impediment to enjoying the plot was some of the frankly incomprehensible US jargon - one of the reasons I usually avoid American novels - not to mention the inconsistencies. For instance, towards the end of the book, some government security guy was referred to as Frank Bruni, then the second time time he appears he's called Anthony Bruni. Sloppy editing. I persevered to the end, but by about halfway through I ceased to care about any of the characters.
