The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within
The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within

4.0 out of 5 stars a good read and helpful, 2 Dec. 2014

Opinionated, clever and full of words. This book opened up for me a world that I only vaguely knew existed and gave me some bearings to explore it. Fry's joy in the arcane and detail can be frustrating and even irritating. It can sometimes be hard to see the wood for the trees, but the book is worth the effort. It is a good read, but the real value is to come back later and work through small parts where there is genuine insight. Above all, the enjoyment he finds in words and how they are used is catching, and the exercises are great: challenging but achieveable. The best is, that it gets you to write.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a read, 6 July 2014

Makes you think - breakdown of society for reasons that are not clear as seen by young teenage girl. The change in her thinking and feeling as circumstances change is fascinating and well created but characters are a little one-dimensional and although the story was surprisingly convincing, I felt the ending was a bit predictable and a bit of an anticlimax - the real interest is in the change from conventional security to survival mode and how simple and straightforward that can seem. That part is written brilliantly but I think the author was not sure where to take it then.

Clean, controlled and really good sound - not super bass, but matches very well with a mainstream amp (Marantz)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but see it live!, 6 July 2014

Love these dance works. Video quality is excellent, but like all filmed dance, the director has chosen viewpoints and edits so not a patch on being there. This is a particular problem with McGregor works where so much can be going on and there are some annoyances (e.g. when the camera is in fairly close shot when I want to see everything)

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, 6 July 2014

Comfortable enough (better than the original pads) and does not noticeably alter sound, but do not fit tightly on headphones, so keep being knocked off - minor irritation - but good enough to replace damaged pads - not an upgrade in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important, 6 July 2014

An important book in which someone who was an early leader of the "measure and inspect everything" school effectiveness movement reflects on the limitations of that approach and explores how political imperatives have driven it far beyond its purpose and validity. Is American, but has high relevance to British situation - what is happening here is the American approach ten years later - just when the Americans are realising they need to change direction.

Makes great jam and preserves - what more do you want? Heavy but not too massive. Cleans up very well. Holds heat well. Suitable for pickling as well as jams. Good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good buy - excellent value, 6 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just excellent. Feels more plastic than the top range Kenwoods, but everything works very well and is a more sensible size for a small kitchen. More than enough power to knead bread dough properly with dough hook, as well as whisking up a storm with real high speed.
Comes with food processor, separate liquidiser and separate citrus press as well as whisk, dough hook and "K-beater".
Although the unit itself fits into a worktop corner (and looks good) you need to think about where to store all the other bits when not using them (some blades/beaters and link pieces could easily be lost).I'd be interested in a bespoke storage box with a place for everything. Dough (especially) will get up into where the beater inserts, where it is very hard to clean it out. Otherwise very easy to clean and design keeps things where they should be and not splashed about. Overall, though, I am delighted with this and using it a lot.

Works very well. Manual is very limited. Be prepared for much more trial and error than you were expecting (my first batch of herbs dried brilliantly but too three times longer than the manual and books I read suggested).

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but limited, 6 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Helpful in parts for a complete beginner, but annoying that it is all in American units so we have to keep converting and it is not always consistent in using these. Key information (how long at what temperature) is not always clear and you have to look for it. Simple things (e.g. how to dry herbs) is not laid out well. Useful but limited.
