3.0 out of 5 stars Good all action flick, 6 Aug 2014
A john Wayne movie by any other name. Action packed with a few silly melodramatic moments that don't detract too much. As with most JW movies can be watched again and again without losing interest.

What is most striking about the film is the complete imbalance in fire power between the Vietcong and the US army - each time they get into trouble they simply dump all kinds of ordinance on the massed ranks of Vietcong from the air.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not all Kubrick movies are deserving, 6 Aug 2014
Bits of various movies hacked together - feels low budget in many scenes - boot camp overly long and adds little to the 2nd act. Part of the 2nd wave of Vietnam blockbusters - and most if not all suffer similar problems - there was nothing new to say, are 'me too' and superficial.

2.0 out of 5 stars A lot of cliches about Vietnam and a sub-plot that takes over the film - good guy vs bad guy, 6 Aug 2014
This review is from: Platoon [DVD] [1987] (DVD)
Of it's time and overrated. A lot of cliches about Vietnam and a sub-plot that takes over the film - good guy vs bad guy. It is superficial film, with very limited storyline and script verging on juvenile - although that what be more realistic given the average age of soldiers in the actual war.

I did enjoy it when it first came out and I was a lot younger. It was the best of a below average bunch of 2nd edition Vietnam movies - however I've never managed to sit through all of it again. It does suffer somewhat from being 'me too'. When there is 'apocalypse now', why bother with this.

2.0 out of 5 stars 'mr goodfellas' makes shocker, shock!, 1 Aug 2014
a comic book parody of real times.

dicaprio maybe his mate, but that's no reason to cast him here and diaz is totally out of sync playing her normal goofy blonde.

the movie lacks integrity on any level, made by a 'gang' sharing an in-gang joke.

ultimately, it's just another movie about gangs, which frankly as a subject matter is worth one movie and not the thousands that have churned out over the years.

2.0 out of 5 stars vastly over-rated and not up to scratch by any standard, 1 Aug 2014
This review is from: The Departed (2006) [DVD] (DVD)
the majority of the casting simply doesn't work and it's on a slide from there - it's a good ole pals club and it shows. I've watched it a few times and it doesn't get better - the ending scenes are definitely a 'we ran out of money' look and feel, although I simply can't believe they did.... maybe the makers just got bored as well and hashed together a quick exit.

'mr raging bull' and 'mr goodfellas' learned little from his other duff blockbuster about gangs in ny - yet again he gives dicaprio a lead tough guy role and yet again the film plays as an in-joke. the costume drama hokum of 'gangs' now plays as just hokum.

5.0 out of 5 stars don't be confused that it's in b&w, 1 Aug 2014
that hitchcock repeatedly stole so much from this movie for his hollywood efforts in itself should tell you a lot about how good this movie is. watch it many times and still be thrilled.

the theme is smack bang in the middle of it's time, however it hasn't dated (unless you count that it's in b&w). the lead actors deliver to the taut and engrossing script aligned to a similarly taut and engrossing storyline. the only negative is the acting of the agent murdered in hannay's flat - a nod to silent movie melodrama.

easily the most intrigue and thrill packed into a movie of any age.....

2.0 out of 5 stars 70's costume drama humbug, 1 Aug 2014
This review is from: The 39 Steps [1978] [DVD] (DVD)
uninspiring remake of the remake. in order; Hitchcock's version is so far ahead it's embarrassing, then Kenneth More's - a bit of 50's whimsey, followed by this below average effort (i'm too scared to watch the 2008 version).

yes it does it's best replicate the look and feel of the times, but frankly that adds little. one of the reason's why Hitchcock's version is so compelling is that it was in it's time.

I'm not sure of the point of making this movie - there's absolutely no conviction to making an exciting thriller.
It is more of a costume drama - a bit of fun for the one or two actors at the height of their fame in the uk at the time and perhaps a bit of a homage.

go watch the original - unless of course you don't like b&w movies.

2.0 out of 5 stars contrived, superficial, tedious, 1 Aug 2014
This review is from: The East [DVD] (DVD)
setting aside the theme.... the film falls well-short of compelling. there's no tension, mystery or thrill. the story line bumbles along without much conviction and fails to develop interest. fast forward the through the really tedious bits.

returning to the theme, the script is juvenile in structure and content, which contributes significantly to the film's failings. characters are bland and superficial. it's a shame for the one or two real actors having to manage with such poor material.

for the environmentally aware pre/young teen an interesting movie perhaps.

2.0 out of 5 stars 2or3 different movies poorly welded - very little to cheer about, 24 July 2014
This review is from: Dom Hemingway [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
Reasonable start - offensive, rude and quick fire. Then it drops into the basement of seemingly unrelated events - which I mainly fast forwarded through. And than a quick reprise of the first bit at the end. Clearly there was great challenge in sticking to one view of the type of film being made. Law's character in the first bit is kinda on the mark, but no-one else's is. Grant is miscast. Other characters pop in and out and just plain wrong in any context of the type of film being made at the points they appear. Overall, lacks focus, and is inconsistent in feel and story line throughout - compare to ritchie's films which by this standard would rate 6 out of 5.

American Hustle [DVD] [2013]

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, entertaining enough..... But who's conning who?, 24 July 2014
This review is from: American Hustle [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
Yes we know what's going to happen at the end but the film still plays well enough without losing interest. There's an odd relationship between the FBI agent and his boss and doesn't really fit with the rest of the film's general style. There seems to be quite a bit to and fro along the story time line and sub-twists in plot to try and throw you off what remains an obvious plot. I'm not too anamoured with cooper in the role as he plays it ambiguous - at times he seems to playing for laughs, which I'm not sure fits the bill. I could extend this to both Adams and bale in their varying emotional demeanour through the film - it just doesn't hang together for me and some scenes just seem out of place with other scenes in context of their emotional reactions. I'm just wondering whether the writers and director kept changing their minds about what type of film they were making - sometimes it comes across as a spoof - perhaps that's the joke - the film is con of a fictional con............
