Metal Box
Metal Box

1.0 out of 5 stars only for the hard of hearing, other than 'poptones', 24 April 2016
This review is from: Metal Box (Audio CD)
the classic 'poptones' stands isolated in a wilderness of bereft of melody, song and coherence. attitude counts for something, but not to the exclusion of anything tangible.

Coming Up for Air
Coming Up for Air

2.0 out of 5 stars average follow-up, 24 April 2016
This review is from: Coming Up for Air (Audio CD)
average follow up to moving targets, 1 perhaps 2 standouts, Come into the Open the best. I always found the vocals flat and the music too rocky for it's day. used to have the vinyl but was sold on after around a year.

4.0 out of 5 stars consistent set of tunes, 14 April 2016

this is the most consistent set of tunes, although there's no stand out track and there's no monkey 23. there's enough variability to make it interesting and possibly why some fans don't rate it. there's one track where the hook is very close to the rolling stones, but hey, how many variations can you get with western rock music building blocks......

2.0 out of 5 stars Great music from a different perspective, let down by the sound quality on the CD, 10 April 2016

I adore the 4-track ep on Virgin, one of my fave records ever. The LP versions on this CD are not the same and to my mind not as good. As a another reviewer points out the sound quality of the CD is undeserving of the quality of the music. It"s pity that with all the dross that is being 're-mastered' those who put this out can't be bothered to make the same effort with an original sounding artist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just let your imagination flow, 28 Feb. 2016

Above average, just about 50s sci-fi. The main thing is the story line is pretty strong for what looks like a b-flick. Acting wooden, yes, but I don't think it spoils the viewing. No comment about special effects etc - it is what it is for the period and this was at the start of the b-flick sci-fi craze. Faith domergue was strictly b-actor and it shows. The rest are only slightly better if at all. The final point is there's enough here to send your imagination racing which is what the mo it's is all about.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shameful 9, 19 Feb. 2016
This review is from: The Hateful Eight [DVD] (DVD)
Made for those who love every second of all qt movies. For the rest of us it's the usual plod through qt's fixation for third rate movies of his youth, brought back to life with multimillion$ budgets. Some collectors are not very discerning. There's lots of tv shows about them and this film is the output from one of them. Slapping and punching women around was standard fare and in some cultures is still de rigueur amongst the men folk. it's shameful qt can't see past his voyeuristic blurred vision artistic values and collector syndrome.

Spy Game [DVD] [2001]
Spy Game [DVD] [2001]
Dvd ~ Robert Redford
Price: £2.94

3.0 out of 5 stars above average spy caper, let down by the implausibility of the lead's actions and their outcomes, 14 Feb. 2016
This review is from: Spy Game [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
decent watch, however suffers from the lead having increasingly extraordinary powers to achieve his goals. it's typical of filmmakers and writers being forced into near fantastical events because the original vision of the storyline doesn't stack up when they came to fill in the details.
if a desk-spy was so exceptional at getting results, why is he retiring with only such a small nest-egg - are spies so poorly paid?

the flashbacks are good value, realising believable events. another bonus is that brad pitt tries acting rather than his usual 'brad pitt' posturing, and does an ok job.

Human Capital [DVD]
Human Capital [DVD]
Dvd ~ Fabrizio Bentivoglio
Price: £7.99

3.0 out of 5 stars not about the art, it's about the money, money, money, 14 Feb. 2016
This review is from: Human Capital [DVD] (DVD)
the punch line is at the very end, in writing, presumably because the director had forgotten what the movie was about while making it. either that or an obscure reference.
in the main, roles are caricatures and the writing a juvenile's take on life's ups and downs.
problem is for italien directors they still exist in the long shadow of the great neo-realists, but aspire to hollywood success.

on the plus, it's a relief to be able to watch a film that retains some sense of the culture it was filmed in (however tenuous), and despite it's hollywood aspirations and a central storyline about the rich and infamous. it would have been a 2-star otherwise.
