Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
i got this free from amazon vine and have played it about 10 times, mostly with my 9 year old son who picked up the idea quickly and really likes the game.

Although easy to understand the game involves some thinking and tactics to play as well as, of course, luck.

Recommended if you want a simple but fun game which can be enjoyed by adults and children alike

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, 5 July 2008
I read this book aver 15 years ago and thought it was amazing. It follows on from 'the clan of the cave bear' and 'the valley of horses' both of which were top notch.

I would strongly recommend reading the other books first, and i guess if you have you won't need a recommendation to read this one since you wil know how good they are.

I would add that the passages book (number 4) and the shelters book (number 5) are not as good as the first 3. Particularly the 5th book has been criticised by many.

However please don't let that put you off reading the first 3 as they are excellent escapism. This book is one of only a handful of books that have made me cry - and i've been reading for 20+ years

Highly recommended

1.0 out of 5 stars sorry Catherine, i didn't like it, 4 July 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Eyes of a King (Paperback)
I read in the daily mail that this was this was the next Harry Potter. so i eagerly purchase from Amazon (WHSmith didn't have it in stock) and fine it to be boring drivel. I only read 150 pages and switched to another book.

Do not be fooled by the hype - this is not a replacement for H Potter and Catherine is not the next JK Rowling. Of the pages i did read i kept thinking "this is the work of a child" and as a teacher i am sure that some of my students could do as well as Miss Banner.

A disappointed reader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as COD4, 1 July 2008
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars

I bought this game because of the favourable comparisons some reviewer made with COD4. I have played for a few hours and i know already this is NO WHERE NEAR the quality of COD4. COD had something that this game lacks - atmosphere. In COD i felt i was an actual soldier on an actual mission. With this game i feel i am controling a dull charcter on dull missions. Do not believe the other reviews - this is poor.

When you die in a game you expect to go back to the last checkpoint. And if you killed 3 people since that checkpoint then you would expect to have to kill them again, right? Wrong - i'm not sure what the developers had drunk when they made these decisions but you don't have repeat any of the killings again.

So, between checkpoint you have to kill 10 people right. Ok, just kill one or two at a time and don't worry if you die. The baddies are still dead when you revive. What a silly idea. Could you really imagine having to do this on COD4? It would have made it SO much easier and more boring. Pass a checkpoint in a vehicle and then die in that vehicle! Don't worry when you respawn at the checkpoint your jeep/tank/helicopter is fine.

Helicopter a bit damaged? Worry not - just exit it and use an electric drill to get it back to full health. And it doesn't matter where you use the drill either. These few gameplay decisions just seem really stupid to me. On a more serious shooter you just wouldn't see these things

I'm afraid that my copy will be going on amazon marketplace tonight

Not more than 10 minutes ago my wife and i finished watching series 1 and we thought it was brilliant. We normally watch 24 or lost on dvd but thought we'd give this ago and i'm so glad we did. Not a dull episode. Not one.

Am just about to order series 2. I hope it's as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise. Recommended, 8 Jun. 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I didn't really like Codemaster's DIRT which i borrowed for a friend. So when GRID came along i wouldn't have given it a second look had it not been for the many good reviews on Amazon and other such sites.

GRID tries to capture, in a arcade fashion, the excitement of many different types of racing from Touring cars to formula 3, from drift machines to Demolition Derby tough boxes. And my goodness how well it succeeds in this repect. The races are very exciting and the tracks are superb including Le Mans which you get the chance to race at the end of every season. I cannot emphasise enough how exciting these racers are. I'm not quite sure why they are so brilliant but it might be because of the excellent trail camera which doesn't seem to be fixed but rather flings around corners with you.

The retry called flashback is a breath of fresh air for gamers like me who don't spend hours and hours a day on each game we play. If you make a mistake in this game yu can simply press the back button and take the corner again (or whatever you were trying to do). I think this is excellent. I have lost count of the number of times in PGR4 that i have had to restart the race because i took ONE corner badly in a 10-15 min race and therefore lost. The flashback feature (which can be used up to 4 times a race) is a blessing and i don't want to play an arcade game again that doesn't have this feature.

I don't normally care for drift races but the ones in Grid are finely balanced. Practice a little and you will get better and make some nice combos (over 1 millon combo last night). The faster formula 3 cars corner like they are on rails and are great to fling around corners but the most fun i have had so far is with the Demolition Derby races. Many laugh-out-loud moments in the races i've played. Even when you are first in the race that can easily change if a car crossing over your path sends you into a spin.

To sum up, this is SO much better than i thought it would be and for any racer fans it is highly recpommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 17 May 2008
I really don't know why this product gets such bad reviews.

I first purchased dazzle about a year ago to transfer some old Hi8 camcorder to dvd. unfortunately my pc was not powerful enough and the video it produced only showed a change of picture every 1 second or so. This was NOT the fault of dazzle but my pc having a 1ghz processor (a 2 gh processor is needed)

Fast forward (pun intended) a year and i have a new Dell Vista desktop PC and so i use the dazzle again. This time i needed to download the vista drivers from the webiste labelled on the box AND then install the software on the disc supplied in the box. Then i just connected up the dazzle to the black and yellow cables supplied with the camcorder and click about 3 buttons on the PC and the video is being transfered to DVD. Dead easy.

The software is about as easy and user-friendly as i have ever seen.

If you want to copy camcorder footage to dvd this is highly recomended

5.0 out of 5 stars I agree with J cooper - a great guide, 1 May 2008
nearly 300 pages filled with details to help you on the missions adn help you find the missing items and the unique stunt jumps.

I tried a mission last night called 'snow storm' where i had to collect soem drugs from some bad guys. I kept dying :( So read the guide and it showed me where some armour was nearby and also where a speedboat was so i could escape my 3 stars wanted level. Tried it again and succeeded first time :)

Highly recommended for the casual gamer wanting to get more from this excellent game

5.0 out of 5 stars The very best in video games, 25 April 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Now that I've had the game for a few days and played it for about 12 hours I thought I'd update my review that I posted earlier

Firstly - should you buy the game? Undoubtedly yes! If you enjoyed the last 3 you wil almost certainly like this one. Rockstar have taken may of the great qualities of GTA and kept them WHILE improving many of the slightly annoying details.

A good example is the new AUTOSAVE feature which saves your progress at the end of a (successful) mission. With San Andreas I used to have to drive to a safehouse to save between missions - now I rarely visit a safehouse.

Also Rockstar have changed the way you die - now if you lose your health completely you `wake up' At the local hospital, lose a small amount of money but you KEEP YOUR WEAPONS. Previously you would have had to visit the ammunition to buy new gear.

When you fail a mission now you get a text which lets you go back straight to the beginning of the mission without the need to travel there. Brilliant change.

The aiming mechanism used to be a pain in the backside but now it is much improved. You can lock on to a bad guy by holding the left trigger and fire by pressing the right trigger. Alternatively, if you want to free-aim then just hold the left trigger halfway down.

All of the changes above make the game so much better in my opinion.

The game play has not changed terribly, but if it isn't broke, don't fix it. The cars handle with more difficulty than previously but you will adapt pretty soon to the new style of driving.

The level of detail in the game is the reason it gets 10/10 from me - the many thousands of bins, phones, litter, graffiti, posts are incredible. However Rockstar managed to fit this on a DVD is incredible. It must have taken thousands of man hours to program the amount of detail in this game.

The missions are similar to previous games with a few new ones e.g. chasing a subway train whilst on the road in a car. The first few are very easy and serve as a tutorial to the new controls but not one so far has been a chore to complete.

Commit a crime and the cops come after you. Get a high enough wanted level (shown by stars on the screen) and they make it very difficult for you to get away. A three star wanted level meant a helicopter was trailing me last night and it took about 10 minutes of frantic driving through alleys and making fast turns to lose the cops. Pricelessly good gameplay tho...

In summary, this game is incredible. The only other 360 game which comes close to it is call of duty 4 which in my opinion was amazing. However COD 4 will only last about 6 hours and GTA 4 wll last much much longer (14% completed after about 12 hours)

This game is the definition of UNMISSABLE. 10/10

3.0 out of 5 stars Bring back the old Burnout, 14 April 2008
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
I was a huge fan of all of the burnouts since the very first one and 'revenge' is probably the best - i actually completed the single player with perfect in all events.

The new freeroaming burnout is a completely differnt game and i ahve to say i don't like it anywhere near a much. In the old games the 'wrong turns' were blocked off, but they're not in this one leading to some errors at 100mph and more than a little frustration. The level up seems similar to older versions but you seem to ride the same routes at each level just in faster cars and there doesn't seem to be as much variation as in burnout revenge.

Burnot has been great up until now - please bring the old version back Criterion

UPdate - i've just recieved a second hand copy of burnout revenge and i intend to work my way through this better game again. If you have neither i would suggest buying revenge over paradise
