5.0 out of 5 stars Superb racer!, 2 Jan 2013

Easily on par with the likes of Mario Kart - personally I think I prefer this to the MK series of late, which have become a little stagnant. The constantly changing track layout and the switching between car/plane/boat is good too, adds a little extra challenge to the game! Perhaps a few frame rate issues on occasion, but nothing that detracts from the gameplay!

4.0 out of 5 stars My wife is enjoying this more than me :), 2 Jan 2013

Perhaps not my kind of game - feels rather scripted - go there, do this, speak to them...graphically excellent, running at full 720p, just a little slow paced for me! My wife, however, has really enjoyed it and is around 50% through at the time of writing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the money!, 2 Jan 2013

Whilst the sound quality from the speakers is surprisingly good for the size of them, the speakers are not what I would class as 'Active' since they run from the power/battery of the MP3 player and do not have their own power source. Overall 4 stars, though we did presume that 'Active' meant the speakers had a mains adapter and would therefore charge the MP3 player whilst it was docked!

At last, Nintendo joins the HD world and has the decency to supply a HDMI lead in the process (which neither competitor does I believe!) :)

This is my first HD console and the difference really shows - once developers get on top of the GPGPU (which the 720/PS4 will also have!), this thing is going to rock!

Assassin's Creed 3 is super crisp and smooth, Sonic Racing is good fun and NintendoLand almost made the previous games stay in the box until tomorrow!

I can't wait to see what the future holds, as the present is already good!

If your screen looks anything other than those in the links above, then get on to Kindle Support. There seems to be a few unluckly people out there so it is worth swapping yours if the screen is not as good as it should be.

I appear to have been lucky with mine, the lighting is even with the minor hotspotting to the very base of the screen where the LEDs are mounted. Considering how hard it is to get even lighting from LEDs, the Paperwhite screen is fantastic! I was unlucky with my first Kindle, a Touch, which had random 'Touch' going on with the screen - Kindle Support quickly dispatched a much better replacement. My Paperwhite, however, is perfect - noticeably faster page turns than the previous Kindles (even with the single page refresh turned on) and the front-lit screen really does go nicely with the higher resolution e-ink screen and new fonts to give an improved reading experience.

The new menu layout is great too, appearing more like a tablet than an e-reader. Add-in the official cover which fits perfectly, turns the Paperwhite on/off when you open/close the cover, this is a really nice bit of kit :)

5.0 out of 5 stars You thought the previous Kindle covers were excellent?, 24 Oct 2012

I have a Kindle Touch which is due to be replaced by the Paperwhite. The Amazon cover for the Paperwhite turned up a couple of days before the Kindle and I am nothing but impressed.

The Amazon cover for the Touch fitted perfectly, really snug and in no way too bulky. My only grip with the Touch cover was that the leather covering was a little easy to mark - I'm rather possessive of my Kindle and try to be careful with it, even though it has a nice protective cover, yet even this carefulness has resulted in some scuffs to the smooth leather.

The Paperwhite cover is still leather but it has a mottled, almost snakeskin style finish. The leather is much firmer to the touch and I doubt it will mark at all without a decent knock or scratch. When the Paperwhite turns up shortly, the cover will most likely fit as well as the Touch one did, but the added magnetic closure is a bonus which should reduce the chance of any accidental opening of the cover if it's in your bag - topping this off, the magnetic closure also triggers the Paperwhite to turn on when you open the cover and off when you close the cover. That's a neat little addition, a subtle improvement to your e-reading, as it truly becomes like a book now - open, read, close, stop reading. No buttons to press to turn it on or off!

As always, I find the little extra for an official cover is really worthwhile, the quality is absolutely superb, it will easily last the lifetime of the Kindle it is protecting and most likely hold reasonable value if you'll upgrade to a newer Kindle (which will turn up someday!) in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's more to self defence than learning a martial art!, 2 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whilst in no way suggesting I am an experienced martial artist, I have trained with 4 different styles of JuJitsu/Jutsu and at 1 Judo club across a period of 20 years. Only one of these styles put any emphasis on training beyond the physical, ensuring legal awareness of self defence was part of gradings, and whilst one style taught something towards realistic training scenarios, it went nowhere close to another (my second to last experience) who had situational and scenario based training to try and bring an element of reality to what we were learning. Given I have always looked to train in martial arts to pick up some workable self defence techniques, it has often been disappointing to find little beyond a nod.

This book takes things further again, discussing the legalities surrounding violence and self defence, then progressing into the psychology of the attacker(s). No specific physical techniques are taught, that is beyond the scope of the book, however what you do get is feedback from an experienced 'fighter' (through his work as a bouncer/prison guard and from day-to-day life experiences) on what works and what doesn't - in what you need to consider in your martial arts training to have any chance of using this training to defend yourself or a loved one. From basic concepts like escape (which is really what self defence is about) through to explosive pre-emptive attacks, the reality of violence and how to deal with it makes this book an almost essential read for any martial artist who thinks or wants their training to be useful 'on the street'.

Reading this book has prompted me to buy another book by the same author, "Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected", I am hoping that one will be as informative and relevant to self defence and my own training as this book was!

As with most if not all of the 'new tooling' Airfix kit, this one fits together superbly. The detail on the model is outstanding, with plenty to keep most modellers going without problem.

3 different paint schemes/variants can be built, but don't forget the paint and glue :)
