2.0 out of 5 stars Dull, Dull...., 29 Mar 2014

This is one of the most boring rom-coms I've ever read. It goes on, and on, and on. And when you think it's about to end, there's another good few hours of struggle to go. There is a little love interest, a bit of family crisis and a son-in-law who creates friction... but other than that there's really nothing to say, just dull, dull, dull. Try something else.

This starts well, it's pretty witty and made me laugh several times. The plot, however, is ridiculous, and you find yourself thinking 'could this get any more crazy?' and the answer is usually yes. There is a sexy male muse, a skitty best friend, and the boring protaganist.... classic elements of chic lit. Not too bad for a VERY quick read, but don't expect fireworks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit Boring but some nice characters, 29 Mar 2014

Not too bad for a rom-com. Little bit of twisting story line, some good character formations... I made it to the end without too much effort. However it's a charity shop number not a best-friend-pass-along book. Maybe try something else?

2.0 out of 5 stars Unstimulating, 29 Mar 2014
Why is it that americans sound sarcastic even when saying the most basic compliment? Not even a sniff of romance from this snivelly american take on what should be the most romantic city in the world. This is an unfeeling, unexciting story which wastes your time with the inevitable. The story components are vaguely interesting, however it is too contrived for any twists in the plot. I wouldn't bother if I were you, I mean I didn't even pause it when I got up to make a cup of tea, and I didn't miss anything.

I loved this book. Castles, a true love and a sexy man. What's not to like? Is fast moving and has some substance. Good choice!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good to dream..., 26 Jan 2014

These recipes are deceptively complicated, and the ingredients often hard to source. You don't, for example, want to buy all the spices, in the knowledge that you will never use them again. Apart from that there are some really nice ideas and some good photography. The instructions are fairly straight forwards.

You need to be prepared to flick back and forth when you realise your recipe need a certain source, recipe for which listed in the front, and not included in the ingredients list. This is a pain.

A lot of the sources you have to make this from scratch two days before and you have to prepare in advance for a few of these. Some you can just buy ready made.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much waffle, not enough syrup, 26 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Oh Dear Silvia (Kindle Edition)
Very interesting story idea: chapters of various people important to Silvia's life talking to her whilst she is in a coma.

However, there is so much waffle that at points I was reading maybe two sentences on a page. I would have given up, however I actually paid for this and was determined to see it through. It does kind of add up at the end, however I'm not convinced the struggle is worth it.

Another point against it, is that half of it is written in the dialect of a Jamaican nurse and a crazy indonesian friend, and this is so difficult to read that I pretty much skipped these chapters completely.

Worth about 99p? Don't buy a paper copy full price, and definitely don't read all of it if you get bored. Skip to about half way through and skim it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick read - very ordinary., 26 Jan 2014

This book was pretty good - the only thing wrong with it is that it is set in America, not England, and it's a bit like Jenny Hale has never been to a stately home, but is describing something she saw once on Downton Abbey. Once you get over that and get into the story you find yourself wondering when everything is going to go wrong, and how the ending which you can guess from the start is going to unravel itself. Worth about 1.99? Don't pay full price, but enjoy it as a quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winter Warmer, 26 Jan 2014

This is the kind of book you need to curl up with a hot water bottle and zone out. Another predictable read from Carole Matthews, with the middle aged women and potential love interest interfering with a solid relationship. The side story involving two lads from juvenile detention is soul warming and the book really had a good ending. Everything wraps up, and then you get an extra chapter or so for luck. A very quick read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Predictable but a bit different, 26 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is trashy, and a very very quick read. However, that is what I bought it for, and it's quite a page turner. The setting for this book is a bit different, so I enjoyed that, and I did fall in love with the characters despite being able to predict two chapters before the next sequence in the story line. The main character is whiny and in decisive and the love interest is my ideal man. If you want something good to read and just turn off from life in the evening, then this is a good choice!
