4.0 out of 5 stars Poor start but improves, 11 Jun 2014
I downloaded the sample of this, and wouldn't have bought it as a result. However, it was in the Prime library, so I borrowed it on impulse and was glad I did. The start is very weak, and the author has a very irritating habit of moving between the first and third person without any discernible reason. The second part of the novel feels like it was written by a different author, taut, well written ( though quite a few typos) and exciting. I love this form of alternative history, and the second half is up there with the likes of Harvey Black, Andy Farman et al.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now we need a book about the aftermath!, 25 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent conclusion to the series, a touch of Hackett's Third World War, a soupcon of Chieftans... Well written, fast moving, thoroughly enjoyable. I would have liked the naval part to be more developed, but I suspect Mr Black has stuck to the areas he knows well as a former soldier. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read It!, 26 Mar 2014

There are a large number of technothrillers out there at the moment, some better than others, and many that are so dire that I wonder why they bother. This, however, is well written, fast moving, clear, and grabs you from the first page. I am a fan of Farman, Gee, Harvey Black, early Clancy etc. This book ranks right up with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb fantasy, 7 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I would say that this is far closer to Joe Abercrombie than Gemmel, the writing style is similar, and Gallow reminds me of Logen Ninefingers. The battle scenes are good, though not up to Cornwells standard, and the story is intriguing. I am a keen fan of this type of fiction and would strongly reccomend it to all the fans of Gemmell, Cornwell, Abercrombie,Lawrence,Kearny,Kristian, and the new Anthony Ryan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great alternative history, 1 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have read and enjoyed any of Chieftans, Red Gambit, Red Storm Rising, Team Yankee etc, then don't miss this. Well written, realistic, and unputdownable (if such a word exists), part two out in August hopefully, and I will be getting it immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 7 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well written and interesting premise. This is written as a history book not as a work of fiction, it is just the history that is fictional. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the rest of the series. My only negative was the lack of maps, a curse that seems to afflict all the current writers of alternative history

3.0 out of 5 stars more stupid errors, 6 April 2013
Why has the author researched all the naval matters exhaustively and yet made ridiculous errors that are so simple to check. The author is American, I believe, and thus his lack of knowledge regarding who was the monarch in ww2 is excusable, his inability to check, however, is not. The SAS were created during the war, and thus it would be difficult to be commissioned into it prewar; ignoring the fact that they recruited from existing regiments as they do today.
These sort of errors are irritating, particularly as a previous review early in the series pointed out that we had a king not a queen, and I would hope he reads his reviews.
It is a good story, it is well written, but check the facts.

4.0 out of 5 stars sort out the stupid mistakes, 30 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good book, nearly ruined by stupid errors. All through the book it refers to Sea Harriers when he means Hurricanes which I find incredibly annoying. He appears to have researched Royal Navy ww 2 history exceedingly well, but let's himself down with the above. Other reviewers have already commented on other mistakes, and there are a few spelling issues, but it is a good story which is generally well written. I fully intend to purchase the next two in the series and hope they have been better checked.

Will only work if you have a zipcode. The company might like to consider how anyone can use it if they live outside the USA. Perhaps they could employ someone with a positive iq.

The tokens take 20 minutes each, and you can't upgrade even though the upgrade is advertised after the game. Ask zinga and you get a computerized answer too a different question. Amazon aren't interested in helping, so each game takes forever. No customer service at all.
