I wanted to like this, 26 Mar 2011
I eagerly started reading and I really, really wanted to like it,but found it boring. Reading it felt like driving a car with the handbrake on. Pity, but something was just missing.

In many ways an instructive book, 24 Sep 2010
Myself being born during the WWII in a country at war it was really interesting to compare the conditions between GB and Finland. Lots in common, lots different. The first thing jumping into my eyes was the mentioning that despite food rationing there were always sausages to buy. Sausages - an unheard of luxury here! And pig's feet, egg powder - what a feast. I just loved the book.

My own fault, 24 Sep 2010
for not realising what an "Quick read"-book means. So it was a disappointment as I expected another book like O`Neill`s other books about East End. This was an interesting read, only too short for me.

A good read but, 24 Sep 2010
I was disappointed for it being so short.I expected a "real book",not a leaflet. More fool me for not reading carefully the information where the number of pages was mentioned. But,the book in itself was interesting.

A very enlightening read, 19 Aug 2010
This is an interesting and informative book. I have since my childhood read about Africa and biographies and stories related to it. This is a reliable source of happenings putting several exaggerations and stories to rights.

A book in my favourite genre, 19 July 2010
I have always felt "at home" with books placed in the war period. These characters are exceptionally life-like and it is a pleasure to read about them. Unfortunately part 3 is unavailable so I have not read part four as I don't want to lose the thrill by jumping over one book.

maybe it was me, 25 April 2010
but I was quite fed up with this book in the otherwise good family saga. I felt like throttling a couple of the family members for their stubborness. And is it really believable that the children seem to fall in love practically out of kindergarten? And that all the women ever want is a husband and babies? I could go on and on...
