Doctor Who and the annoying Tegan, 21 Nov 2011
Although I only buy the 5th Doctor Big Finish audios I have to say that this is not one of my favourite stories and as far as I am concerned it could have stayed lost. If you take some of Earth's history and bandy it about a bit, knit it back together, dropping a few stitches here and splitting others there you have an Earth human story on an alien planet. God, Gods, humans fighting against each other over something (someone) who is a living being and of course tangible but nobody is allowed to see it. People are being brainwashed by a machine, to think like the unseen (God) read alien and this all comes about in only 10 years! Question, what was this planet and it's people like before the pretender arrived? If some of the people were supposed to be like Christians, hence God and like Hindus hence Gods this might enlighten us as to why throughout the story the same characters say at one time God and at another time Gods. Unfortunately we are not enlightened at all about what the planet was like before the High Priest, also read Hitler, arrived.
Everybody plays their parts well although Janet Fielding loses her Australian accent quite often (nothing new there) and some of her lines are flat, as if she doesn't mean what she is saying. Also I was confused at times as to who was who amongst the good guys and the bad guys, especially when they seemed to change sides and then one became a lunatic (excellent performance by this actor). There is also a character named Ella who is almost a match for Tegan but of course Tegan takes her glory and by the end Ella sounds flat.
To sum it up, if you like civil war, domination by religion and aliens out back pulling the strings, (sound familiar?) then this is for you. Plenty of action, lots of killing, including Tegan unconvincingly leading the underground. Nissa doesn't have as much to do as the Doctor and Tegan, almost side lined like Turlow.
In conclusion this is after all Doctor Who and the 5th Doctor, the peace maker, so no matter how many unwinnable wars fall in his path or take the Tardis of it's path he will bring peace to the unfortunate planet with his, well talking? He has no weapons, not even a sonic screw driver. Words maketh the man and this Time Lord.
I love the 5th Doctor but if they could just send Tegan back to Australia.........Yes I know, I know, she is loved by all men!!!!!
