Price: £4.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Viking Saga, 26 May 2014

A tale straight out of the Sagas, with Gods, blood, vengeance, honour, superstition, blood, mighty warriors, a Shield Maiden, Gothi/Godi, beautiful women, blood, evil men, powerful and power mad wives, signs and portents, and even more blood,
A rollicking, action packed tale to read by the flickering camp fire light. Can't wait for the next installment.

A little harsher than usual and lacking some of the subtleties of previous works. Maybe Yav will grow on me with subsequent listenings. I'll still be attending the forthcoming tour to witness the bands awesome live performance.

Wald Vengeance (The Wald Chronicles Book 3)
Price: £2.90

3.0 out of 5 stars Steady but unspectacular, 26 May 2014

A decent conclusion to the Wald trilogy but lacking something compared to the earlier volumes. My involvement with the characters s was somehow lessened this time round. The emotions and divided loyalties of several protagonists seemed forced and unrealistic at times. As we approached the inevitable conclusion I had the feeling that I wished they would hurry up and get on with things. A well written series that just lacks that vital spark that would set it apart from the pack.

A cracking album. Not quite up to the standard of Design Your Universe but up there in the bands all time top 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome as ever, 26 May 2014

Another fantastic read from Mr. Cameron. The sense of witnessing firsthand the events of this book comes across so naturally that you can almost smell and taste, as well as see, the scenes unfold. Whether it's the Olympics, land journeys or sea battles the authenticity oozes from the page. The author is currently suggestion a holiday in Greece spent visiting some of the battlefields covered in this series and others. It's a trip that would be difficult to resist.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a drop in form..., 18 April 2014

I've enjoyed this series to date but have to admit that Sword of Rome is easily the weakest book in the series.

Firstly, the plot is virtually non-existent and revolves around Verrens traipsing back and forwards between potential Emperors to very little effect. The plot picks up a little towards the end of the book but the ending itself stretches the readers credibility to the limits.
In addition, there must surely be a limit to the amount of times our hero can escape certain death at the last possible moment. I lost count of the times Verrens closed his eyes to accept inevitable death only to be saved by a seemingly never-ending selection of rescuers.
Lastly, the books villain couldn't have been more cliched if he'd worn a cape and cackled constantly. Indeed he did a fair bit of cackling at every opportunity, and some foaming at the mouth to boot.
All in all a disappointment which had the feel of a filler volume. Hopefully things will pick up with the arrival of Vespasian and his legions in future volume/s.

Cold Days: The Dresden Files, Book Fourteen (The Dresden Files series 14)
Cold Days: The Dresden Files, Book Fourteen (The Dresden Files series 14)
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A return to form., 24 Mar. 2014

Whilst the last couple of Dresden novels have been steady efforts, the breakneck pace, convoluted plotting, and slick, humorous one-liners have been at somewhat of a premium. Not so, however, with the latest offering Cold Days. Dresden is back and so are all the gang. The gradual escalation in both Dresdens power and the level of opponents pitched against him continues at a pace, as does the plot, with page turning ferocity and twists and turns aplenty. There are significant progressions in both Harry's personal self-assessment and his understanding of the world in which he operates, and similar developments in the situations and characters of the supporting cast.
A very enjoyable novel, and a welcome return to form.
