Disappointing., 4 Mar 2005
After the all the positive press that this film has recieved, I have to say that I found it a big disappointment.
Admittedly the opening set up is impressive and the film is based on a great concept. Also the final twist is a good one that genuinely surprises.
Unfortunately, for all of it's good points this film suffers badly from a poor script and an acting style that from most is hammy and obvious.
Saw ends up relying too much on ideas pinched from other films (especially, and perhaps too obviously, David Fincher's Seven).
As the story unfolds, it does so not with a series of clever twists, but by using clunky dialogue that in retrospect feels like the film is rushing along to get to it's final shock.
This is exactly the problem. The film has a great beginning and end for which I award it a star each. The rest however feels like standard cliche's rehashed to get from A to B. The idea of Danny Glover's cop driven to obsession feels overused and corny. The MTV style edits already feel dated as does the industrial rock score.
Frustratingly, I think in the hands of another director this film could have been really, really good. The end result, unfortunatley, falls just short of the mark.
