5.0 out of 5 stars Solidly made and well packaged, 17 July 2015

Nice product: the magnets feel strong, but not so strong that there's a problem separating the two sections. Please note that the both sides of each section are protected by films, four films in total; I simply couldn't see the internal films when mine arrived, and thought the product was scratched.

My son had a pair of these in the 3-4 years size, which we bought from Tesco; they're firm favourites and they've lasted well. As he's now two months short of being five, they're on the small side, and so we got these as a replacement. (There didn't seem to be a 4-5 years size).

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicely made, shame the publishers didn't proof-read it properly, 6 Jun. 2014
My partner bought this for our son, 4.5, who can't read yet but loves his superheroes. It's a well-made book, and the stories are well-shaped. American English and (of course) and American setting, so there may be a few unfamiliar words. My only annoyance, given the reputation of the publisher, is that no-one seems to have checked the text, so that, for example 'villain' is repeatedly misspelled, and some sentences aren't grammatical. If your child is learning to read, you might want to take that into consideration.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Penguin Modern Classics edition: ropey, 5 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One reason for buying "classics" editions (Penguin Classics, Oxford World Classics) is the belief that the text has been properly checked against a reliable edition. I bought what claims to be the Kindle version of a Penguin Modern Classics edition, but the text is full of obvious inaccuracies. What I guess should be "listlessness" becomes "lisdessness"; "not" becomes "riot". There are full stops missing all over the place. This leaves me unsure elsewhere: is the "old negro" mentioned at one point "scared" or "scarred"? Penguin should be able to do better than this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition very annoying, 22 Dec. 2013

This review is from: The Ghost Rider (Paperback)
I bought this on kindle, tried to read it on iPad and iPod. There are very annoying changes in font size throughout. I've not seen the print text, and I imagine these changes correspond to something in the original, but they're very wearying. I gave up reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of plastic temporary down pipe, 20 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had a cracked cast-iron downpipe that was leaking onto my walls, and needed to a quick temporary fix. To my amazement, Wickes and B&Q online don't seem to stock temporary downpipe. 20m was far more than I needed, but it did the job.

An Apology for Old Maids, and Other Essays
An Apology for Old Maids, and Other Essays
by Henry Dwight Sedgwick
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.50

1.0 out of 5 stars General Books edition: very poor OCR, 21 Aug. 2013
I bought the print-on-demand edition published by General Books. The title verso gives a detailed account of their automated process, and admits that there might be optical character recognition (OCR) errors. Too right there are. The process is entirely automated, and it's clear that no human intelligence whatsoever has gone into the creation of this book. The last sentence of one chapter is followed immediately by the title of the next, without any blank lines; the last line of the final chapter is followed by the adverts that appear at the back of the original Macmillan edition. Plus all the predictable misreadings: capital Roman 3 is transcribed as 'Ill', 'comes' is rendered as 'conies', words are missed out entirely.

To be fair, if you type the ISBN into their website, you can access the Google Books image of the original text, and resolve any ambiguities there. But to be honest, you might as well just access the Google Books image and not waste your money on this shoddy product.

The Jonathan Meades Collection [DVD]
The Jonathan Meades Collection [DVD]
Dvd ~ Jonathan Meades
Price: £12.80

5.0 out of 5 stars The most distinctive TV-essayist of last thirty years, 14 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Meades first came to my attention when I was a student, with The Victorian House, Abroad in Britain, and his collection of essays Peter Knows What Dick Likes (1989). I had mixed feelings about him then as now, disliking the posh, barking delivery (barking as in loud, not mad) and feeling that there's something attention seeking about his more provocative lines. (In this regard, he has something in common with Jeremy Clarkson.) On the other hand, his most provocative lines stay with you ('If Joe Orton were alive today, he'd be dying of AIDS'), there's an independence of thought that goes beyond provocative journalism, and, most importantly, in the TV essays he carved his own distinctive visual style. They're still compellingly watchable and listenable, and compared to the bland pap that constitutes most contemporary TV, they're a richly flavoured dish, to be enjoyed slowly and digested fully.

Yes, like other reviewers I'm disappointed that this selection doesn't contain all Meades's work for the BBC, but we're rating the DVD here, not the BBC. 5 stars for it, and I hope that encourages the BBC to put out a complete or a supplementary collection.

Inform Educate Entertain
Inform Educate Entertain
Price: £5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply nostalgic -- or is that just me?, 5 July 2013
On paper, an album of electronically tinged indie-rock instrumental tracks with 1930s, 40s, and 50s samples sounds like it be more cerebral than emotional, but there's something about Inform Educate Entertain that gets under the skin. In other hands, the mostly male, Received Pronunciation samples that PSB use might be deployed ironically, or edited in ways that turn the words against their speakers; but here we're given what feel like generous portions, and nothing ostentatiously sneaky in the editing, so the whole work embodies a nostalgia for an era of 1930s-1950s idealism, national collective consciousness, and -- of course -- public service. Of course you can't help being aware that the power was being wielded by public-school- and grammar-school-educated white middle class men -- there are no regional accents here -- and that it wasn't a bed of roses, so the feeling isn't uncomplicated, but there is feeling here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacement for iBook G4 wall plug, 26 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've had my iBook G4 since October 2005, and it's still more-or-less working; but yesterday I went to unplug the power adaptor from a particularly tight socket (which was connected using the small removable plug originally supplied, not the long flex and plug), and the plug shattered. (Power adaptor type: Apple 45W Portable Power Adaptor.) This replaces it very satisfactorily. The profile -- i.e. depth from the base of the pins to the back of the plug -- is shallower than the original, about 18mm as against 27mm on the original, and to that extent the product isn't quite as pictured; but the shallower profile fits the adaptor snugly, and would only be a problem if you were plugging into a socket that was recessed.
