4.0 out of 5 stars Ambition leading to disappointment, 3 Feb 2014

This review is from: Barracuda (Kindle Edition)
An excellent account of a boy's unbridled ambition to rise from his lowly position in life using the one skill he has - swimming. He achieves initial success and mixes in more sophisticated circles. However he sets his sights too high and when he does not meet them, he gives up completely bearing a terrible grudge.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sheer romance, 25 Oct 2013

Pure Mills & Boon in a young gay form; boy meets boy and they live happily ever after. Important issues are brought up but not handled seriously. There is the particular situation of Mick finding the eleven year old Orlando very attractive. There was a hope at this point that more interesting territory was being entered but no, the incident was just passed off .Why introduce something like this and then just drop it? The only good thing about the book is the sex!

I am always pleased to come across a book by Nabokov that I did not know about but I am afraid it is clearly not him at his best..

A well written story giving real insight into what life was like for gay people in the fifties. It also gives a good picture of life in Brighton at that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars useful device, 30 Oct 2012

device has proved to be very useful and works well. my only criticism was the lack lack of instructions for loading the software from the disk. a certain amount of guesswork and trial and error was required. however I succeeded and the device is now working well.

Gypsy Boy on the Run
Gypsy Boy on the Run

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult progress, 13 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Gypsy Boy on the Run (Hardcover)
This is a follow up to the author's 'Gipsy Boy'. This book, written a year later, covers much the same ground but goes into more detail of the later life and there is some new information at the end. To my mind this is a better book; it is more balanced. The awful things in the boy's childhood - the fights, the beatings, the extreme cruely of the father, became a bit much in the first book; the same patterns repeating over and over (one has sympathy but ...). The early life is not ignored here but the later events in the boy's life are more interesting - the problems he has in making a life of his own away from his family and the Romany culture. As might be expected, he does not find it easy and there are many setbacks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic bridge, 13 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Cardturner (Paperback)
A heartfelt attempt to bring the game of bridge (now usually thought of as an old peoples game) to youngsters. A teenage boy who had no interest or knowledge of the game becomes hooked after being persuaded to help his highly skilled uncle who has gone blind.
The successes of both uncle and boy are dificult to believe but it is a good yarn in the realms of fantasy. There is a good background mystery concerning the uncles's early life.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Gay Romeo & Juliet, 13 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A lovely story with the classical sad misunderstanding. The original was in Swedish; this English translation is by the author. I have mixed feelings about this; the English is far from perfect but on the other hand a definite Swedish atmosphere is produced giving the book a somewhat other worldly feel. An English speaking translator would have produced a very different, possibly inferior, result.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea rather spoilt, 3 Oct 2011

This review is from: Acquired Tastes (Paperback)
An interesting idea - a secret society founded at university by a group of gay men promising help and support to one another both at university and afterwards. Spoilt by rather gratuitous porn.
