Blue, at best a kind of Blue-Grey, rather than the Black-Grey as shown. Disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dr Shen Hongxun's Dragon Daoyin Re-Packaged?, 1 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Damien states at the beginning of the book that he first encountered the Dragon Daoyin in Shandong China, later he describes an incident that occured when practicing the daoyin as a teenager. Given his own accounts of his life and training, this seems odd in itself.

While he does not acknowledge them much, Damien (through his uncle) was involved for some time through his earlier years in studying the Buqi system of Dr Shen Hongxun. It just so happens that Dr Shen developed a system of Dragon Daoyin exercises, that are based around the idea of opening the skeletal system to release 'bingqi' (pathogenic/sick qi), awaken and open the spine and so on. While it can be argued that there is always a similarity within such practices, I can honestly say that after studying several different lines of "daoyin" that there are huge differences between what people in China consider daoyin, let alone the component parts involved in the methods.

The close similarity of Damien's descriptions, as well as his own accounts of when he was practicing the 'daoyin', ie during that period of time of his involvement of Dr Shen's system, makes it clear enough where a lot of the information Damien is writing about actually comes from. I'm sure there has been further study, and no doubt the external form of the exercises has been shifted (though anyone with any understanding of internal arts knows how much the form can be changed without changing the inner teachings). Why no credit is given, and why instead it is implied that the whole method stems from a group in Shandong is beyond me.

It is certainly an interesting book, though I agree with the other reviewers that you cannot learn the actual method from the books alone, but then I don't beleive Damien has that expectation. If this area of study is of interest, I recommend reading this book as well as looking into Dr Shen Hongxun's original teachings of his Dragon Daoyin.

1.0 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPPOINTED, 30 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We purchased these because they were meant to be a better model than our previous Philips Bluetooth headphones (SHB5500BK) which we both love. The price had been dropped to lower than the other model, and so seemed like a bargain.

The headphones are not as adjustable as the SHB5500BK and as such the squeeze from them was annoying to both of us, they were simply uncomfortable to wear. Further to the physical discomfort, we found that there was a background noise from the headphones regarding the bluetooth connection that was distracting. It would start up and tail off just before and just after the music being played was started and stopped.

Needless to say this is annoying unless you are playing loud constant music that drowns it out.

VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Fundamental Iron Skills: Tempering Body and Limbs with Ancient Methods
Fundamental Iron Skills: Tempering Body and Limbs with Ancient Methods
by Dale Dugas
Edition: Paperback
Price: £19.17

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Informative, if a little disappointing..., 10 Feb. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been aware of Mr Dugas for some time, and his approach comes recommended. I found this book to be a very small overview of the subject, that has a small chapter on every aspect of it. Overall I liked the book.

I appreciated the brief history of Iron Skills in the States, and of the discussion on each aspect of the practice. I was also grateful to Mr Dugas for actually including some of the herbal formulas used within his method.

The book loses one star because it really needs a better editor who will actually proof-read it properly and correct the numerous errors in grammer, spelling, the bad English that occurs, and the sentences that appear to have been written for a different edition than the final book. While certainly not the worst book I've read with these these issues, it was enough to drop a star from the review.

The book loses a second star because unfortunately, like a great many other books of this kind, the descriptions and attempts to illustrate certain methods and techniques are quite poor. Mostly in the qigong and martial application sections. This issue is always an issue and I'm well aware of the problems that come with trying to impart such things through the written (and pictographic) medium. However, the book is targeted at being a practical book, rather than simply discussing history and theory, and I felt a much better job could have been done to honour that. Given his background I really felt the qigong section would have been better. As for the martial application chapter, I can appreciate why there was felt a need to include one, but in all honesty, such things are nearly always pointless. I'm sure Mr Dugas feels the work is sufficient given the medium, and that it is intended to be used alongside his DVD's as well as teacher-student insttruction.

1.0 out of 5 stars Interpretation not Translation, 11 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Such a bad translation. It isn't a translation so much as an interpretation (all translations are to some degree, but this is heavy handed), and with quite a strong 'bias' on it that moves the English far from the Chinese original. There are many places where the English projects a particular view of Chinese Daoist cultivation that is not present or extant in the original text. This is mis-leading and shows that while the original author may have been discussing one thing, the translators do not know what that was. Bisio (and team) instead shoe horn the original text to fit their views instead of letting the text speak for itself. The single star is because they had least had the good sense and courtesy to include the Chinese text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Better in Energy-Consciousness Work, 5 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This CD set is a great compliment to the book, I highly recommend both. John Friedlander's teaching is comprehensive, clear, informative, and very practical. There is nothing better in the area of energy-consciousness work. It isn't about systems, it is about engaging with aspects of your self in a down to earth and pragmatic way. John Friedlander's depth of experience and ability to guide students comes through, with no sense of ego or putting on airs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, 28 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rubbish and predictable, cliched, tired, overly drawn out and painful to watch. Each episode is a writers attempt to imaginatively get Bacon somehow to face a bad guy alone, and the FBI and Police seem to have completely dropped all situational awareness and tactics, repeatedly just to set up more deaths. The continued deaths of colleagues and innocents doesn't seem to have made anyone any the wiser! Loved the basic premise but it quickly deflated into a farce.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended discussion of the Kundalini Process, 24 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A simply fantastic book. Highly recommended along with its companion volume.

Provides much food for thought, lays things out in a simple and easily digestable format. The author also provides a way for you to go deeper into each area if you so desire, with extensive annotated bibliographies.

I dropped a star from this review, simply because at times the author appears to assume the reader already has extensive knowledge, yet it is a guide intended even for the newbie. This occurs as referring to aspects of the Yogic view but not explaining them.
