4.0 out of 5 stars HISTORY MADE UNDERSTANDABLE, 4 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ALWAYS ENJOY THIS AUTHOR, HE ILLUMINATES THE WAY THE PREJUDICES AND TREACHERIES OF THE AGE AFFECTED PEOPLE, AND WE CAN UNDERSTAND THE GHASTLY TRUTH THAT HUMAN NATURE IS STILL MUCH THE SAME AS IT WAS. HIS REASONABLE PORTRAYAL OF HIS MAIN CHARACTERS IS ALWAYS ATTRACTIVE.

3.0 out of 5 stars MAPS NEEDED, 4 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I chose to rate this book at 3 stars because what it seriously needs is a map, or several maps, in order for us to locate all the various countries. A fold-out map would be good, otherwise one has to have a historical atlas which means the book cannot be read other than at a table. I usually read in a horizontal position, and shall have to position myself on a chair with a table nearby.

Drawing Conclusions: (Brunetti 20)
Drawing Conclusions: (Brunetti 20)
by Donna Leon
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.29

4.0 out of 5 stars UP TO STANDARD, 4 Jan 2013

Drawing conclusions: A classic Leon, always has an original slant, and enjoyable readable and keeps one interested. The corruption in Italy is always slightly depressing. I can't think how she keeps thinking of plots.

I find Professor Grayling's work admirable as he puts forward a calm but truthful analysis of the questions which are very relevant to today. The layout of headed chapters also means one can follow related subjects for further clarification.

This book is so wonderful as it covers important and vital subjects in a clear manner, often making one think seriously about previously held opinions. This is a marvellous aid to clear thinking and I love him and am buying more of his books

4.0 out of 5 stars TOLSTOY IS MARVELLOUS, 9 Mar 2012

I THOUGHT I HAD READ WAR AND PEACE WHEN I WAS 16 BUT I MUST HAVE SKIPPED A LOT. THE ONLY CRITICISM IS THAT THE FOOTNOTES (MAINLY TRANSLATIONS) APPEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF PAGES BUT THIS IS TRIVIAL. IT IS A TOWERING PHILOSOPHICAL WORK WHICH IS ALSO RELEVANT TODAY, AND MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT ALL SORTS OF THINGS, RELIGION, WAR, CRUELTY AND THE HUMAN CONDITION. I HAVE BEEN READING IT FOR THREE WEEKS (AM A FAST READER FOR 3 HOURS A DAY) AND AM ONLY HALFWAY THROUGH. IT'S WONDERFUL.

I AM ALREADY AN AVID READER OF JANE AUSTEN AND AM JUST ABOUT TO RE-READ (FOR THE 10TH TIME AT LEAST) ALL HER WORKS. HAVING THEM ON KINDLE MEANS I CAN TRAVEL WITH HER WHOLE OUTPUT IN MY BAG, WEIGHING VERY LITTLE. SHE IS A MATCHLESS WRITER.
