Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have Makita products already, this is a no-brainer. Switching the battery from the drill I already own to this hoover is very easy. The battery lasts for longer than I ever need to use either bit of kit and then doesn't take long to charge.
This hoover sucks well and is very easy to empty. The pipe is long enough to allow you to use it like an upright hoover (unless you are very tall!). Thoroughly recommend it if you have a small home, caravan, boat, summerhouse etc...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the money, but you need a screwdriver..., 9 Feb 2012
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought two of these sumo suits for a hen party. They were easy to put on and seemed pretty durable, and fitted women of all shapes and sizes easily, even over winter clothes. They survived some pretty physical games and several people falling over in them. Because the fan that keeps them inflated is not super powerful, you do have to make sure that the cuffs are all tight -this is fairly easily done with the drawstrings & toggles supplied and the neck is secured with a velcro strap.

There are some things you need to know (and I didn't before I bought them):

1) you need 4 x AA batteries for EACH suit
2) you also need a small cross-head screwdriver (this was a surprise!) to open the battery compartment. Without a screwdriver, you will have to do what we did, which is struggle for a good 5 minutes per battery pack, eventually levering it open (breaking it) with a selection of knives and other cutlery. It still worked, albeit with lashings of sellotape!
3) the clip on the back of the battery pack is too stiff to clip onto any clothes so we used the back pocket of the trousers the girls were wearing underneath.

Other than that, they were great. Had I know about the screwdriver, they would have been perfect!

4.0 out of 5 stars Child-size croquet set, 1 Aug 2011
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
What I had not realised when I ordered this croquet set is that it is far from a full-size set. It states on the short description that it is a "traditional croquet set for adults and childrens alike." If you are taller than about 5', you need to bend a long way to hit the ball as the mallet handles are only 2 feet long (61cm). The mallets, once assembled, are quite sturdy however.
The hoops are white plastic-coated wire (rectangular rather than semi-circular hoops) and are quite flimsy and easy to bend if you are trying to push them/bang them into dry ground.
Overall, quite good value for money but definitely more suitable for children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighter weight than expected, 1 Aug 2011
Nothing wrong with this tracksuit, but it was a much lighter weight tracksuit than I had expected and therefore I returned it. The returns process with this vendor was straightforward (postage paid by me), the refund was processed quite quickly and the shopping experience was a fairly positive one overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough glove, good fit, 1 Aug 2011
Wanted a tough glove for my husband who spends a lot of time in brambles and thick undergrowth and needed a glove that would protect him from thorns but also give him the dexterity to handle tools and equipment, eg drills and screws. He was thrilled with these.

Creative Vegetable Gardening
Creative Vegetable Gardening
by Joy Larkcom
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is gardening "porn" (am I allowed to write that?!), 5 May 2010
For all of us brought up with parents or grandparents, or older friends who showed us the 'rules' of vegetable gardening, where cabbages were confined to an area out of sight of the neighbours, and onions would under no circumstances be allowed to flower, reading Joy Larkcom's book feels like a rather guilty pleasure. The idea that veg don't have to be grown as single crops in formal rows, and that perhaps a little disorder may be a good thing, feels so wrong and yet so right!
Full of beautiful pictures of vegetables (!), this book qualifies as coffee table material - it's where art and gardening meet - but is also fascinating, inspiring, and written with such unbridled and infectious enthusiasm that it's difficult to decide whether to put the book down and action some of the wonderful ideas, or continue to indulge your creative fantasies, cup of tea in hand!

I haven't rotivated all my lawns yet (though it's tempting), but I have already done some things that would make my poor old grandfather turn in his grave, such as starting to growing runner beans up through the climbing roses (could make picking interesting, we shall see) and sowing brassicas in my flower borders. Ms Larkcom's book makes you feel as if anything is possible and nothing is forbidden.

For anyone starting out with a blank canvas, there are also plenty of planting plans for all kinds of soil and location, and the section on individual vegetables is packed with useful information. Whether you need some creative inspiration, heaps of practical advice or if you just enjoy beautiful pictures, I would strongly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but..., 5 May 2010
This book, in my opinion, is suited only to absolute beginners. If you've never read any other books on vegetable growing and you don't know the first thing about gardening or growing vegetables, this is a very easily readable book full of clear instruction about the basics. However, if you know the basics, or you have grown vegetables before, there's not much new in it. I also bought Joy Larkcom's book on vegetable growing and found it much better value for money.

One other thing: the title is somewhat misleading as the section dedicated to month-by-month sowing, harvesting etc is only a small part of the overall book.

How To Be A Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking
How To Be A Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking

5.0 out of 5 stars Straighforward, unfussy recipes, with fantastic results, 23 Feb 2004
Plenty of people I know rely on expensive ingredients to impress at dinner parties. Now, I'm not normally one to show off in the kitchen, but after one dinner party which began with Small Tomato Tarts, and ended with Chocolate Babycakes (both recipes from this book), all of a sudden, my friends seem very keen to come to dinner!
I've made the Pink Grapefruit Marmalade (just so surprisingly easy), and the Spiced Apple Chutney, and before you think that I must have loads of time on my hands and a huge kitchen, I run my own business and my kitchen is the size of a postage stamp.
I know from the first Nigella book I bought (How To Eat) (equally great) that her prose is wonderful. There's something about the way Nigella writes that makes you feel so good about indulging your womanliness in a little home-making and baking. The recipes are easy, fuss-free and very few require either ingredients or equipment that you won't already have or can't easily source at your local supermarket, so you can really keep the cost of entertaining down. She even gives a long list of useful suppliers at the end in case you're really out in the sticks!
I'd strongly recommend this book - whether you're buying for you, or as a gift - even the least enthusiastic cooks will find this inspirational!
