4.0 out of 5 stars No man is an island except for Mr decaprio, 2 Feb 2011
This review is from: Shutter Island [DVD] (2010) (DVD)
other reviewers have pointed out the similarity in plot with the sixth sense, this is partly correct as what you are watching is not necessarily the full picture. A Dark, moody, well acted and directed film, the cinematography adds to the whole oppressive feel of the film. Echoes of spaceys peformance in k-pax where an incident in the past has far reaching consequences to the protagonists. A film to watch again to pick up on the clues dropped by Marty.
excellent film, fully recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars the book of shoight, 30 Dec 2010
This review is from: The Book of Eli [DVD] (DVD)
A rather daft film that is basically the road with guns.
Denzil washington what were you thinking??
And Gary oldman, shock horror plays the psychotic villain - again.
sooo disappointing

3.0 out of 5 stars 5 * you are kidding, 17 Dec 2010
I doubt you will ever accumulate such a talented group of actors. The end result is 'ok' there are some laugh out loud moments and the spirit of the film owed much to catch 22. But it meanders a bit. It could have been much more you think. Not a bad film but not a great one either.

4.0 out of 5 stars layered and intelligent, thought provoking., 12 Nov 2010
This review is from: The Reader [DVD] (DVD)
Well what would you do if you lost your virginity and fall in love with a fit german clippie, who neglects to tell you she was an ss guard at a concentration camp? That essentially is the plot, the guilt and betrayal felt by a boy and then a man is laid out in flashback. This a clever thoughtful film were both the protagonists are betrayed by each other over a 20 year period. Winslett is excellent and fully deserved the acclaim and awards, smaller role for Fiennes but delivers a good performance as ever, , schott who plays his young character is excellent. production values high all around, a film that surprised me in a nice way, not a film for a mindless popcorn filled saturday night, give this one your full attention and you will be rewarded.

1.0 out of 5 stars A single moan, 9 Oct 2010
This review is from: A Single Man [DVD] (DVD)
Theres no doubt Colin Firth deserved his oscar nomination, and the film does ooze a contrived charm and style, but ultimately one was left cold by an underwhelming film, far too many flash backs that it eventually disappears up its own backside.

3.0 out of 5 stars Have faith, 6 Sep 2010
This review is from: The Infidel [2010] [DVD] (DVD)
A mildly amusing film built on the rather thin plot that a muslim(Djalili) finds out by accident that he is was actually born jewish and adopted into a muslim family, thus jeopardising his own and his sons prospective marriage, the best moments occur when djalili attempts to understand Jewish ritual and custom via an ascerbic Jewish american London cabbie and you get a film that does serve up some funny moments, but tries too hard to push the idea that the jewish and muslim faiths are more similar than either would admit in public.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just before the wheels came off, 5 Sep 2010
The background to this album showed the band were beginning to fragment, Gabriel was outgrowing the band and tried to singlehandedly tried to write this concept album, in the end he just could not cope, and had to rely on rutherford and banks to help him out with the songwriting. Not a bad album by any means and does have some wonderful moments, but it all sounded a little strained, and reflected the divisions that were surfacing in the band.
Gabriel left shortly after completing the tour, a sad send off for a glorious decade of music from this classic line up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Genesis album?, 5 Sep 2010
Very difficult to separate the 70's genesis albums with Gabriel as front man, they are all great. But I think in a poll of fans this would come top.
Why? suppers ready of course, a wonderful 20 minute opus inspired by a spiritual incident experienced by Gabriel and his then wife, Jill. The final few minutes still make me cry.
Before then we have the wonderful watcher of the skies and its impossible time signature, get em out by friday a song that predicted the social engineering undertook by nu Labour.Every track is wonderful. An Album that cemented the band as prog rock kings of their day and propelled them into world stardom, still a powerful album despite its age, only Radioheads OK Computer can compare in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tanks for the memory, 1 Sep 2010
I do not think I have watched a film depicting a tank crews experiences. It has that claustrophobic feel of das boot. Set in the chaos of 82 beirut war it depicts the experiences of an inexperienced crew caught up in a chaotic mission, the general message is that war is hell and young men cannot cope, seen and heard it before, but an imaginative attempt to tell this story from a different angle.

somebody should lock Tim Burton up and prevent him making any more films, especially with Mr Depp, too late though to prevent him from ruining another classic piece of English children's literature.
