1.0 out of 5 stars Incompetent piracy, 9 Dec 2012

These songs are by June Christy (all of them unless a couple are by Chris Connor), NOT Anita O'Day. I would give zero stars if I could.

1.0 out of 5 stars overpriced, 9 Jan 2011
The songs by Anita O'Day are great, but this compilation is rather overpriced while we have Avid's collection of four albums Four Classic Albums (Anita Sings The Most / The Lady Is A Tramp / An Evening With Anita O'Day / Anita) (Digitally Remastered) and, for O'Day 1941-1952, the Proper set Young Anita (4CD).

1.0 out of 5 stars rip-off!, 9 Jan 2011
The songs by Anita O'Day are great, but this compilation is way overpriced and totally uncalled for while Avid's collection of four albums is available: Four Classic Albums (Anita Sings The Most / The Lady Is A Tramp / An Evening With Anita O'Day / Anita) (Digitally Remastered). See also Cool Heat: Anita O'Day Sings Jimmy Giuffre Arrangements for many tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest collection of early Anita O'Day is also a bargain., 1 Nov 2010
This review is from: Young Anita (4CD) (Audio CD)
This Yank is a big fan of Anita O'Day and collects her recordings. There are probably 20 collections covering her early years, from 1941 to 1953, before she signed with Verve, and this is without question the best of them. (1) It is the most comprehensive, a huge selection, including Gene Krupa, Stan Kenton, and even five radio sides with Nat Cole. (2) The quality of the mastering is very good. (3) And the accompanying booklet is very well written and illustrated and is alone worth the price.

This collection costs more in the USA and from online auction houses. Purchased new from Amazon.uk, it is a genuine bargain.

If you haven't yet discovered this gifted artist, consider also another bargain, the Avid collection Four Classic Albums: Anita Sings the Most/the Lady Is a Tramp/An Evening With Anita O'day/Anita of Verve albums. 5.0 out of 5 stars treasure for collectors, 14 Aug 2010
This review is from: You Betcha (Audio CD)
This release looks like yet another anthology of her hits but in fact is a collection of live broadcasts. The audio quality is not as good as from studio recordings, so someone new to O'Day should start with re-releases from the Verve catalog Four Classic Albums (Anita Sings The Most / The Lady Is A Tramp / An Evening With Anita O'Day / Anita) (Digitally Remastered).

To fans and collectors, the last four tracks alone are worth the price, very rare recordings with Benny Goodman's ensemble from their European tour in 1959. Goodman resented the way O'Day upstaged him, and she left before the tour's end.

"Ooh, Hot Dawg" is better known as "Boogie Blues." In "Uptown," O'Day is pattering with trumpeter Jack Sheldon.

5.0 out of 5 stars very collectible, 22 Feb 2010
I collect Anita O'Day CDs and DVDs and was delighted to get this release. The two CDs are frankly a selection of her hits and I expect they are fine, but what makes this release special is the the 16-page graphic story inside the case. It depicts an incident before she joined Gene Krupa in 1941, found around page 89 in her autobiography, where she forgot the words to a song, scatted instead, received an ovation, and then was fired by Raymond Scott. She became a star later.

Don't get me wrong: the graphic "novella" is hardly a first edition Batman. But if you are an Anita nut or collector, you want this release. Me? I got mine!

A 2007 release from Wea International has Bonney singing these 11 Mozart lieder plus 11 more.
