5.0 out of 5 stars Original Albums, 6 May 2013

I have no. 1 in this series, and no. 2 was a necessary next chapter, with later albums. Recommended. Yes, you need them all. Nice roundup getting non-album singles as the invisible "8th" album (really 16th when counting box 1).

5.0 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise!, 9 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 8 Classics (Audio CD)
This series of reissues are pure value for your hard earned money. Although the image outside might give you an idea of a box set consisting of small vinyl replicas, you will not get them. Instead you get a double jewel cd case, with four discs with pretty cool labels that might remind you of vinyl with some oldfashionedstyled labels. The included 8 page booklet tell you nothing about the content of the albums, except some noncomplete information about musicians, production and publication dates etc. Who wrote songs etc. are not even mentioned. The sound is - for this price - amazing. Pretty sharp, and no violenting mastering process to be heard.

What makes this a worthy reissue is of course the possibility to listen to the albums as they originally were published. In the case of Ray Charles, I am pretty sure most people know a lot of his songs from this glorious period, but have never heard them in their original context. That is at least the case for me, but now I am given that opportunity, to find the hits; the misses; the fillers; the overall idea of these albums of a giant in the history of music. And you will probably not so often get that much qualitytime in front of the stereo as you are brought through these. Beware! There is another 4 cd box set following this one. No need to miss that either!

5.0 out of 5 stars The issue of organization within the box, 24 Feb 2013

This review is from: The Complete Recordings (Audio CD)
Dear Sirs! There has been some disappointments connected to some facts about the organization of this box set, and to some level it is really visible that three different earlier box sets (that all are still available) have been put into one bigger one. In order to get yourself better access to the liner notes and tracklistings, I would suggest that you order your box like this: 1) The "biographical sheet", 2) "Introduction to box 1" and it's nine cd's following that order, 3) "Introduction to box 2" and it's nine cd's following that order, 4) "Introduction to box 3" and it's eight cd's and the dvd following that order. That will give you an acceptable order within the material.
Another issue is connected to the pairings of albums, which is not done in particular to follow chronology, even if that sometimes could be possible, but follow the pairings that has been available on the two-fer cd's that have been the best offer to get for buying Fela in this century. What the exact ideas have been with those pairings are uncertain to me, but they are working good!
The reproduction of the original sleeve designs appears with one cover on each side of the paper replica, so all information about tracklistings, recording dates etc. have to be found in the small booklets, that also give a very small introduction to each album (smaller than the one's appearing in the originally seperately published two-fers earlier in this century).
The printing is generally faithful to the album's original expressive character. The sound of these albums is overall very good, and connecting to the fact that master tapes seemingly do not exist, I believe this will be an acceptable level of high fidelity for Fela listening in this lifetime.
Mostly I just wanted to express a way into this box, since you will probably get more music than you ever will regret putting into your collection!

4.0 out of 5 stars the sound issue, 21 Nov 2012
These albums are great. Worth every dime. Worth every hour. I like the small vinyl replicas, all foldout with lyrics. Some with an extra sheet in order to print all the lyrics. Most too small to read, but the aesthetic feel will be kept as close as possible to the originals, and that is the most important for me. I am sad about the rather lame sound, not fully reflecting the instrumentation, either giving any newborn freshness to these highly memoriable records. But if your shelves are empty or you need quality music: this will satisfy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased, 16 Dec 2010
This album contains no elements of tiredness you often expect from artists with more than 20 years of experience. It is not even a left-hand product, like "solo albums" of "band leaders" sometimes are. It is only pure quality. This music got a message. There is a reason albums like these are made: you should listen to them! It cannot be compared to late 80's, early 90's classics from P.E.. But compared to any hip-hop album of 2010, this will be found as the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars How rock should be, 1 Sep 2009
This album gives you an idea of what BOLD music should mean. Possibly their best since Three Snakes. Groovy and dark, sensitive and dreamy, pure Crowes all the way. The bonus album - Until the freeze - are somehow less focused, but more acoustic folk-oriented. Both are recorded in an intimate setting, with some rather unnecessary clapping between most of the songs. Through these 100 minutes the Crowes bring back to life every dream ever dreamt. Let's hope the double version (similar to the LP's) could be available as CD's as well. OK, I know, I'm oldfashioned. It's OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting artist to re-explore!, 29 Nov 2006
This review is from: Nine Lives [Box Set] (Audio CD)
This is 8 solo albums and the Honeydrippers EP, all covered with some bonus tracks; but make sure you also buy Sixty Six To Timbuktu, because none of it's pleasant extra material are found included on this package. I find that case a pity, because a 9 cd box would firstly appear to completists and with some creativity the necessary space might also be found. The fab title Nine Lives would of course be destroyed by including even further cd's to let that material pass in... Someone might also miss the two Jimmy Page and Robert Plant albums of the 90's: No Quarter and Walking Into Clarksdale.

The enclosed dvd shows 20 (= all?) of his music videoes, and draws a stylistic time-line that might be useful to know. Also on the dvd are one documentary, with a really interesting interview with Plant, along with other musicans comments.

Most positive with this box set is the possiblity to see Plant on his own, not only as the fab Led Zep singer who later made a few albums on his own. A lot of people do already have half or more of this stuff on various sources; but do remember the large work that has been done on the remastering. This box set should be listened to with interest and openness; which is what his post-Zep heritage deserves!

The bonus material consists of either live appereances, b-sides or out-takes from the albums. There are a few very fine live cuts, extended versions to please you: Thru with two step (recorded 1983) and Ship of fools (recorded 1988). Other live cuts are more fillers in order to include bonus material. The live sound is never comparable to the high quality of the album tracks, but he is a great live performer. The 1980's extended maxi version of "Little by little" give less satisfaction drawn outside of it's original 45 rpm vinyl, but are included in loss of other possible material. The included extra's from Manic Nirvana and Fate of Nations are great, but the re-mixes included with Dreamland and Mighty ReArranger could have been kept as rarities on the singles; none of them appear to give the original versions greater glory.

Anyway should this box set be bought for it's very fine treatment of the original albums, the sound gives hi-fi experiences on each album, but the 80's albums are the ones that grow the most on the sound treatment, the sound differencies of his albums from the later years are less.

This box set gives you 8 great albums in their best possible reproduction. In 2007 will these albums also be available as separate offers, that might be a solution for some of you. Remember to get hold of the Timbuktu for the ca. 20 extra songs not found on this box set.

The biggest surprice for me was the great Shaken'n'stirred album. You should find yours. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great special edition, 20 Aug 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This album is great. Buy ut. But if you have the doubt about really needing the special edition, I will try to describe the difference. This is the ordinary firstedition album put in a 18 x 31 cm white, shiny box, with small paperclips of the artwork put in a shelf behind plastic for your amusement only. This extraordinary great album deserves the best possible version in your collection, but consider the need against the higher price before making your choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the other side of the dreams, 28 July 2006
Ulf Lundell may be as experienced as a Swedish Dylan, Springsteen or Young. Why not? Although making his debut 1975, his records are still highly inspired. This double album is a good way to start exploring this artist, including the gospelish rock'n roll statement Gott att leva ("Nice to live") among others.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fine art paintings with cheap essay, 20 Aug 2004
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book gives a lot of value for the buyer. All of the known Vermeer paintings are reproduced - both as full pages, and various interesting details. The essay includes several views to the art of Vermeer with the best possible wish to understand the quiet riddles of these paintings, but (mostly) end up with over-erotic or moralistic explainations, that (for me) were creating violence to the material. Anyway can this book be worth owing, because of all it's beautiful reproductions and very nice layout.
