I picked up this book on a whim, but discovered a wonderful new talent. Riveting but also atmospheric and touching.

An exciting addition to the Dagger and Coin series. Gripping and fast-moving with believable, sympathetic characterisation. Ends with a cliff-hanger.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, 5 May 2013
This review is from: The City (Hardcover)
I was a fan of the late David Gemmell and bought this because of him and also the hype (thought maybe his wife had been a co-author of his other works). 200 pages in VERY disappointed. Maybe not bad for a first, beginner, novel, but I had hoped for something better.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been eagerly anticipating this book for some time, but have been slightly disappointed with the end result. Brett's story remains compelling but this book is overlong, with an indulgant second language (requiring glossary that is off-putting to less obsessive readers), and endless battle scenes in the later half that drag. However, having said all this, it remains head and shoulders above most fantasy/SF out there and I'll be pre-ordering the sequel.
