The fig leaf falls?, 16 Jan 2013
This is a catalogue published to accompany a supposedly groundbreaking exhibition in Vienna. That may well be the case, but it is not a totally isolated show. There are galleries in London and New York that cater to a certain rather kitsch gay taste. The choices of what to display were rather predictable and therefore the critique along with them similarly staid. The essays were not without merit, but contextually not that innovative, neither art historically, nor from the point of queer theory. The commentators were bland in praise and subdued in endorsement or novelty of exegesis. And so am I. The fig leaf limply falls between two stools - depth of research and pretty pictures to look at.
Nice for the coffee table, but not earth-shattering in content.
