i bought this for my friend. I was exceptionally happy with the thought that went behind packaging. The person who sold this put in a hand written note and a business card.

The actual product was lovely, just my type of thing.

This books gives the opportunity to step into the mind of Lieutenant General Sir Thomas D'Oyly Snow through the memoirs he kept from 1914 to 1915 during the first world war and documents the retreat from Mons, the battle of Le Cateau and the second battle of Ypres. Snow was a divisional commander and despite falling from a horse and suffering a serious injury he went on to lead the fighting at Ypres, Arras and Cambrai and made the command to attack the Gommecourt which failed and cost several lives. After this defeat he was critical of his subordinate, Major E.J. Montagu-Stuart-Wortley who was controversially dismissed by Snow showing not only his power but show the self preserving instincts that he recognized and, as his memoirs make clear, strongly disapproved of in his senior Colleagues. Snow also documents his experiences as a commander and the limitations of both his and others commands during the war. He also makes key observations towards the lack of communications which made it hard for commanders to operate effectively.

For fans of the war or history in general this book is a must, its edited wonderfully by Dan Snow & Mark Pottle and gives eyewitness accounts of major engagements early in the war in great detail including running battles to warfare in the trenches.

The book also comes with a foreword from the generals grandson who also co-edited the book in which he tells of his fascination with generals from the war and the history surrounding it adding a touch of nostalgia and warmth to the book as he puts together this book about his Grandfather that he never met.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another hit from Susan Brewer!, 24 Feb. 2011
Anyone who was a child in the 1960s will undoubtedly recall the numerous rock and roll dolls that hit the shelves that decade and, particularly, the influence that they had on the fashion industry and its models - Twiggy, for example. This book not only covers the dolls in the situation of the 60s, but also delves into the history of the doll; how it has developed over the years in terms of the materials used, and their 'collectable' statuses. The author also takes a look at American dolls which were produced by American companies within Britain to satisfy the mass demand for products, such as Barbie. Filled with beautiful illustrations and engaging text, this book is sure to please those with an interest in collectables, or those simply wishing to take a trip down memory lane.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great book, 24 Feb. 2011
From the author of Collecting Classic Girls' Toys comes this instalment, which thoughtfully explains the changes that comics have undergone over the years. From pre and post-war, through the varying topics of their time in the 50s to the 80s, to today's modern day alternatives; this book encapsulates a wealth of knowledge surrounding the numerous types of comic that were, and are, available to girls. Subjects covered include early comics, nursery comics, pop comics, annuals, and even the free gifts which now so often accompany more recent issues; and in addition, titles such as Girl, Bunty, Twinkle, and Mandy all get a mention. This book is a real treat for its nostalgic property, and an intriguing read for those with a specific interest in comic books.

5.0 out of 5 stars So different but useful!, 24 Feb. 2011
Aimed at those who have an interest in gardening and, in particular, in herbs; this book takes a historic look at the herb as a single category in its own right, from the beginning to present day, and explains the many properties and uses of each herb in turn. Also included, are recipes, tit-bits of wisdom from gardeners past and present, guides on how to grow your own herbs and make your very own herb garden, and herbs' medicinal uses. Whether you're wanting to fill your garden with butterflies and bees, or just wanting to include a little more greenery in your diet; this book makes for an intriguing read whatever the requirement. Although this is the different cover to the real product, it is filled with invaluable content and recipes!

The author's upbringing in rural Derbyshire really shines through in this informatively written and beautifully illustrated book, which, conveniently, also provides a temperature and measurement guide. 5.0 out of 5 stars brings back so many memories!, 24 Feb. 2011
In this book, Susan Brewer explores the fascinating world of girls toys: from the Victorian era, where children of a really wealthy family might possess a china doll, to modern-day bombardment and fascination with 'pink for girls'. Each chapter is devoted to a differing topic, including 'Caring and Cooking', 'Houses and Homes', 'Traditional Toys', 'Cuddlies and Character Creatures' and 'Outdoor Play', and contained within each are wonderful descriptions of hundreds of varying toys owned, and loved, by girls throughout the decades. Particular attention is paid to those toys of the 1970s and 80s, which witnessed a stark rise in the number of character toys, such as Care Bears. A wonderful book of nostalgia, and a wealth of knowledge to those with an interest in collectables.
