5.0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin, conducted by George Solti, 12 July 2014

A beautiful recording - someone wrote (in their review, I think) that 'you cannot go wrong with Solti', and I think that is probably accurate. However, I was extremely disappointed that there was no libretto included, only a synopsis, which is good only as far as it goes. Furthermore, I didn't know till the CD arrived that there was no libretto; a note was attached saying that a libretto could be found on line - rather a sneaky way of informing the customer, I think - and I did find one but it was far too long to print out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing ....., 11 Jun 2014

This review is from: Life After Life (Paperback)
For me reading this book was a complete waste of time as I found the moving forwards and backwards of the action between 1910 - 1967 utterly confusing. It contains some powerful descriptions of violent war scenes, but this is based on research since the author was born some 15 years after the end of the second World War, and to me, though powerful, it does not always come across as being authentic. I very much missed the unfolding of a continuous story and a resolution, which in the novel are replaced by a long succession of fragments which I found irritating: ie no sooner had I started to read, engage with the text and become involved than the action moved backwads or forwards in time. I read this book because my book group was reading it, but resented the time spent reading it as it is over 600 pages long

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 17 Jan 2013

I had expected to hear the distinctive 'Beatles sound' and was therefore very disappointed in all the songs, which came across to me as being noisy rather than musical - with the exception of 'Imagine' which I do like very much, but on the whole I very much regret this CD

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!, 8 Feb 2011

I bought this DVD after reading several of the excellent customer reviews and expected a lot from it. However, I was very disappointed because I found Alessandra Ferri unconvincing as a very young girl. Although she is extraordinarily flexible and her dancing is at virtuoso level, her performance to me lacks youthful passion, as does the performance of Wayne Eagling. I very much liked the set and the muted colours of the costumes, but this did not make up for the shortcomings of the two central characters, and I'm afraid I would not even want to view this DVD a second time.
