5.0 out of 5 stars Another Danny Gregory treasure, 24 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If, like me, you're already familiar with Danny Gregory's books about drawing you won't be disappointed wit this, his latest. If you're new to his work, you're going to want to buy his back catalogue by the time you're finished with this one. Danny Gregory's books are art books designed to get you drawing; his philosophy is that everyone can draw and that drawing is good for you. It grounds you in the present, slows you down, helps you focus and adds meaning to your life. That philosophy has helped to create a HUGE, and I mean HUGE, online community of artists of all kinds who follow his blog, contribute to the online art group Everyday Matters and now learn through the online art school co-founded by Gregory, Sketchbook Skool.

His books also promote that philosophy and none more so than this book, which is based on the principle that everyone can make art and that art and be made in the smallest pockets of time. The book contains an enormous collection of exercises for sketching in just a few minutes - while waiting in the car, in a queue or, as the title suggests, for food to cook or the kettle to boil, using little more than a pen and a piece of paper. Of course, there are also lots of ideas for taking things further and trying more sophisticated drawings, but the fundamental principle is that everyone can draw and you need very little in terms of art materials in order to do so (but that's not to say you can't shop for many more if you want to!). The book proceeds as a series of exercises which you can follow in order if you want a "lesson plan" or you can dip into it for prompts if you simply want ideas of what to draw today - it would work equally well either way. All in all this book is another Gregory treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who's loved and lost, 4 Dec. 2012

This review is from: A Kiss Before You Go (Hardcover)
This is Danny Gregory doing what he does best, illustrating his life in words and pictures. This volume is about his beloved wife Patti, and about his mourning of her accidental death. But it's not remotely maudlin. If you can get to page 40 without tears then you're a better woman than me, but while the book is about grieving its also about hope, and about finding life again after such a devastating loss. In the end the book is as much a celebration of Patti's life as it a memoir of the months following her death.
It's beautifully written and wonderfully Illustrated with vibrant sketches in Danny Gregory's inimitable style. I guarantee you won't read a better book about love and loss this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous book from RJ Ellory, 21 Jan. 2011
RJ Ellory's novels never disappoint. This is a gripping read from start to finish, with totally believable characters and a great plot (obviously built on thorough and detailed research of a number of real life serial killings). The story builds to a very satisfying and nail-biting climax, which certainly had my heart pounding. If you're already a fan of RJE then this lives up to the high standards fans have come to expect, if you're not, the read this, join the fan club and work your way through his wonderful back catalogue.

Once Upon a Time in the North (His Dark Materials)
Once Upon a Time in the North (His Dark Materials)
by Philip Pullman
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest storyteller of our time!, 30 April 2008
If you ever doubted that Philip Pullman is the greatest storyteller of our time, here's the book to assuage those doubts. This tale of the first meeting of Lee Scoresby between Iorek Byrnison combines adventure, mystery, excitement and humour in one delicious package. Like the other reviewers my only complaint is that I was left wanting much, much more. Having said that, it is the brevity of the story that proves to my mind why Pullman is such a great teller of tales. This is a book for children and adults alike, and while you could read it to your children in the course of a rainy afternoon, you will return to it again and again when your children are in bed to enjoy time and again the richness of the descriptions and the humour of the dialogue and to delight in Lee's relationship with his daemon Hester.
The board game that is included with the book is another treasure which subverts traditional board games in that it is the "loser" of the balloon race (i.e the last player to reach the centre) who actually wins!

Brave on the Rocks: If You Don't Go, You Don't See
Brave on the Rocks: If You Don't Go, You Don't See
by Sabrina Ward Harrison

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspirational, 22 Feb. 2005
Sabrina Ward Harrison's books are works of beauty - certainly for the eye but also for the spirit - and this one is no exception. "Brave on the Rocks" is a visual journal. The pages are handwritten, hand painted and hand-collaged while the thoughts expressed in them come straight from the heart.
This is a book for anyone who has ever felt insecure and unsure. Where "Spiling Open" dealt with the angst of youth this book comes after the success of the first, and deals with a whole new set of issues - how to cope with the insecurities that come with fame and astonishing success. Sabrina Ward Harrison picks up on, understands and expresses feelings all-too familiar to anyone who's ever wondered about life, love, happiness, success, failure and a whole of bunch of other things too. And she does it beautifully.
Quite simply, this book is a feast for the eyes and the spirit.

Print Explosion Deluxe Mac

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly brilliant print programme for the Mac, 26 Nov. 2002
If you're looking for print software for the Mac - for home or business use - then look no further. It's obvious that Print Explosion Deluxe has been developed specifically for the Mac and for Mac users. It's good-looking, supremely easy to use and amazing value for money.
The software can be used to create greetings cards, business cards, invitations, posters, banners, labels (including CD labels), calendars, T-shirts, certificates, fax covers and much more. It comes with thousands of ready-to-use templates which are also easy to modify, or you can create your own projects easily from scratch. It includes more than 90,000 clip art images and photographs and 500 fonts covering pretty much any topic you can think of.
The software is very easy to use, even for the most computer-wary beginners (a comprehensive handbook is included with the package) and the results are superb. For more experienced users, it's easy to incorporate your own images in designs - these can be scanned directly into templates or dragged and dropped from your hard disk.
Last but not least, the software is fully compatible with OS X, but will also run on any Mac running System 7.6.1 or later - so if you have OS 9 and OS X running on a partitioned disk, you can use the software with either system.
Great value for money!
