5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this! It’s Sheep at any Price, 19 Aug. 2003
Wonderful drama with many instances of understated British humour and stiff-upper-lipness.
The scenes of 'normal' island life are played out as a counterpoint to the rising tensions caused by a fast approaching invasion fleet.
Ian Richardson, Rosemary Lynch, and Bob Peck (The Governor, his wife and garrison commander respectively) give great performances as the realisation mounts that Whitehall has left the Islanders out to dry in the face of an Argentinean invasion.
The supporting cast of larger-than-life characters (including ex-RM Commando 'Jim', Don the chauffer, the staff of the Falkland Islands Broadcasting Service, Nanny, the 'drogies, the Falkland Island Defence Force and assorted kelpers) are also brilliant.
I can't vouch for the accuracy of the drama, and sure there are elements of flag waving patriotism and stereotyping, but this isn't meant to be biting political drama. You may agree or disagree with the decision to retake the Falkland Islands, but this film gives some insight(albeit stylised)into what was being fought for - the rights of the Islanders to choose not to live under a brutal Argentinean dictatorship.
Sit back and enjoy – you’ll be reaching for the Band of the Royal Marines on the tape deck and checking out how Preston North End faired by the end
[Note - I can't comment on the quality of the DVD, but it has to be better than the worn-out VHS recording taken off the TV that I have]
