5.0 out of 5 stars A superb examination of Islamic Fundamentalism., 13 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is not the easiest I've read recently but certainly one of the most worthwhile. Lord Sacks presents his ideas in a crisp, challenging and thought provoking manner and it is certainly a must-read for anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of the underlying causes behind the current global situation. I therefore unequivocally recommend this book in the highest terms.

This is a wonderufl book and you can see how much love Ringo has poured into it. There are some intimate shots that only a member of the foursome could have captured and I would say indispensable for those Beatles' fans who value their books as much as they music collection.

I am studying for my Semicha and I have found this book to be invaluable as a guide to explain the many complicated concepts. I would not use it as a replacement for Shach and Taz (or anyone else) but it is useful as a revision tool.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Beatles "1" - a new listening experience, 13 Dec. 2015

This review is from: The Beatles 1 (Audio CD)
The Beatles are arguably one of the greatest bands that ever played the planet. Their music is everywhere, both visible and invisible, in the work of countless other bands. That said, I have never been overly keen on the "1" album if truth be told, as it only offers a glimpse into the magic they wove in their output.

If you want to hear the Beatles at their best, I would argue that the only way to do so is by listening to their albums which are nothing short of glorious (although some are more glorious than others...). "1" brings together most of their singles, although I've never understood how an album that claims to list ALL of their releases can leave out a classic like Strawberry Fields Forever which should have been there alongside Penny Lane. Never mind. Starting from this point, if you accept that you're going to get a slightly flawed offering (IMHO), this is no doubt a recommended purchase. I have to admit that listening to the remixed tracks, although beautifully mastered and presented, was a slightly strange experience to a purist like myself. It was akin to the feelings I received when hearing the Yellow Submarine Songtrack album back in 1999. The newly remixed tracks sounded great but was it not slightly disrespectful to the memory of the originals?

Yes, I know that the Beatles wanted to have their tracks released solely in mono and George Martin worked on the stereo mixes for all of 30 minutes...but somehow, it feels as though these tracks are somewhat unfaithful to my boys' wishes. This won't make a blind bit of difference to the younger generations who listen to this release and I suppose I need to move on and except that changes happen organically over time. Perhaps this is the way to restyle the Beatles for the 21st century, but I found it slightly jarring.

I have not watched the video yet so won't comment but I am sure they will be as coruscating in their brilliance. If you like, nay, love the Beatles, then of course you need to get this album. But, purists, go into the listening experience with an open mind and adjustable ears, You'll love it or you won't. It's that simple.

Jeff Lynne's newest album demonstrates that he has not lost his golden musical touch. The songs are solid, beautifully crafted and sound as though they could have been found on any of the band's 1970s albums which is no mean feat. This is definitely a must for all of you ELO fans out there, young and old.

I will start by admitting that, on the whole, I like Ringo's musical offerings, although some more than others. This is one of the better albums he has released, especially with excellent tracks like John Lennon's title number, a lovely version of the Platters' "Only You" and the superb Elton John/Bernie Taupin penned "Snookeroo". Along with the "No No Song", you have a decent crop of tunes. That said, there is filler and the follow up to his excellent "Ringo" album could have been stronger...but all in all, it's a pleasant and mostly memorable collection of songs. It's certainly infinitely better than some of his later efforts!
