Tony Faber has closely woven the story of the Russian Imperial family with the fabulous Easter Eggs made for the czarinas by the workshops of Carl Fabergé ( of french huegenot descent ) in St Petersburg. Each egg is fitted into the story of the events and love lives of the czarinas - their children their background and the great love that existed between the Czars and their originally protestant european brides - all closely linked - of course- to our own Queen Victoria in one way or anothe.

This review is from: Philomena (Kindle Edition)
Much more detail about Michael Hess and his sister Mary , less focus on Philomena the Abbey comes out even worse than the film. Have just read Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline - fictional /fact about transporting homeless children from the streets of Manhattan to the mid west US to work on farms and as house slaves

I love it too - but too much - hours pass - as a 'mature' lady I now appreciate what addiction is like. I had to delete Freecell from my computer now I have promised myself to delete it from the Kindle in the New Year - let's hope I can

Josiah the Great: The True Story of The Man Who Would Be King

4.0 out of 5 stars The Never-to-be-Ruled, 10 Sep 2012

Ben MacIntyre makes facts stream effortlessly off the page. For anyone with an interest in Afghanistan, the Hindu Kush,Punjab and Nothern Pakistan this book is a real eye-opener. The internicine strife, the diplomatic skullduggery, the betrayals are all there to this day but well grounded in history. This story traces an American born Quaker, thwarted in love, who roams the fiefdoms and courts of the area in the 1820-40's eventually gathering an army, following the steps of Alexander the Great. It is tightly written and extensively researched but readable for all that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Memory Loss, 14 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read 'Before I go to Sleep' my book group decided to read 'Forever Today' which was a reference for the novel. Clive Wearing a gifted musician just a year into his second marriage, contracts viral encephalitis - undiagnosed for some weeks. He is left with profound memory loss. If he blinks over a game of patience he is convinced someone has redealt the cards! He remembers his wife but never recalls seeing her. He remembers his music and can play the organ and conduct his choir. Deborah researches the condition extensively, goes through divorce and remarriage to Clive and founds a self help organisation to help other sufferers and their relatives.

Happily Clive had a sunny warm nature and was almost always polite and welcoming to helpers one and all and lives out his life in a well stuctured care facility. His memory has not returned.

I found the book very informative - touching in understanding the plight of those wed to profoundly handicapped people. The brain is a very complex organ !!!Pat Last
