5.0 out of 5 stars The shape of things to come?, 31 Aug. 2006
This review is from: Soylent Green [DVD] [1973] (DVD)
What a fantastic film. No special effects, no gore, no gratuitous sex, just a superb plot brought to life by superb acting and great filming.

The writer's vision of the future for the earth is chilling and he is perhaps closer to an accurate prediction than he could ever have dreamed of. The revelation at the end of the film is a real shocker!

3.0 out of 5 stars No Answers, 30 July 2006
This review is from: Hidden (cache) [DVD] (DVD)
The film sarts promisingly, is gripping for most of it, has a stormingly good premise, but then just fails completely to delvier at the end. I watched as an exercise in how good is my french. There was nothing wrong with my french, the film just has a very poor (or missing?) ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch it!, 30 July 2006
This review is from: Fun With Dick And Jane [DVD] (DVD)
Although some aspects are clearly dated and now to be compared to a 2000's remake, this film is very watchable and I enjoyed it very much. The plot is ludicrous but once you get over this the film is extremely good fun. If nothing else it is worth viewing for the hilarious seventies characatures you will witness.

1.0 out of 5 stars Travesty, 30 May 2006
This review is from: Trivial Pursuit Genus (Toy)
Against the advice of previous reviewers I bought this version in a hurry after discovering on the day of a planned evening of TP with a group of hard core TP fans that my old box was at my parents.

The unanimous agreement of the group playing was that the questions have been significantly dumbed down. We manged to get through three games in as many hours and found that not only were the questions much easier, there was a marked tendency towards making the questions media/celeb related. Some of the science questions were a travesty of the dictionary definition of science and I can only assume that this has been done in order to promote that most ridiculous of modern trends - making something more 'relevant' and 'accessible'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly Dreadful, 26 May 2006
This review is from: Bent [DVD] [1998] (DVD)
This film is truly dreadful. It soon becomes apparent that the film is an adaptatiion of a stage play, as the style of dialogue and visual metaphore are clearly meant to lend meaning to scenes set on stage, however in the medium of a film they appear tediously pretentious. The actors themselves make the best of it though the script lends more than a whiff of ham to the result.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grim but compelling, 16 May 2006
This review is from: Mandragora [1997] [DVD] (DVD)
One of those films that you can't describe as enjoyable as the content is so grim. However it is certainly compelling. I'm still not sure wether to accept the film at face value and trust the director's representation of how such utterly horrible things do really happen. If he is not being sensational though, this film is a shocker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth watching, 16 May 2006
This review is from: Endgame [DVD] (DVD)
Not put off by a previous reviewer's negative opinion I rented this and thoroughly enjoyed it. There is one almost unacceptably implausible twist, but other than this I found it a really quite gripping, well acted film. There are aspects of the plot which are unpalatable, but given that they are a window into a side of life I have never witnessed first hand the plot kept me hooked from start to finish.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, 3 May 2006

Self indulgent, introspective nonsense that is poorly filmed and poorly acted, so don't bother is my advice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Change the title please, 13 Feb. 2006
This book is a serious disappointment. It has very little about the sexual act, and anyone looking to this book for ideas or instruction about gay sex will be extremely frustrated to find the book should in fact be called the 'joy of possible situations or experiences you may have if you are a gay man'. As I perused the particularly fatuous cod psychology of the section on Daddy/Son modelled relationships I could clearly hear the sound of the bottom of a barrel being scraped. This book could only possibly be helpful to someone who had absolutely no experience of gay life, I suggest that kind of person is not the book's target market and the publishers should change the title.

This is an excellent book. If like me you read French just competently, then you will not struggle with a book that has one of the most gripping and original plots I have encountered in a while. I read it in one sitting as I could not put it down!
