3.0 out of 5 stars Good but fiddly - and not for the uncoordinated!, 6 Sep 2014

I really wanted to give this a higher rating, but while the workouts are good, they are too complicated and not in a good way. When I first tried each workout (apart from Scuptilates, which is pretty straightforward) I was immediately frustrated. It's fair enough to have to watch something through once before you try it, but the other 3 workouts are set up so they are really hard to "flow" with.

At first, I wondered if I was being even more unco-ordinated than usual, but on the Cardio Party, there is even a demonstrator who can't keep up with the changes! Even if you are well co-ordinated, there's a lot of unnecessary change and odd counting in this. For example, you will do 1 on each side for a while, then a random 3 and if there is pattern to the maths, you switch moves and combos so fast, it's not possible to remember it. Why they can't just stick with a number, I don't know.

Just as you get in a rhythm, they shout "new move!" In fact, you lose a lot of workout benefits by trying to get your brain into what they are doing. There are also a lot of unnecessary moves in transition, in my humble opinion. It's better use of workout time to switch from one side to the other without a fancy transition.

The thing is, the workouts are actually good! It's just a struggle to recognise any kind of pattern. I tend to save them for days when I'm super alert, so have ended up doing them once or twice a week. Really a DVD like this should be one you could use more often. Debbie Siebers and Davina McCall are much better choices unless you actually enjoy this sort of faffing about. If you do, then you will love this DVD, but I wish the Firm would bring out some DVDs that cut the fiddly bits. Otherwise, the workouts are really good and fun to do.

good but would have been even better with one more perforated strip at top; that way you could detach the top shopping list without upsetting the stuff on the rest of the page.

surprisingly hard to find cards with "75" on - lots of 70 and 80, but hardly any 75! To find one that had a nice design and for a dad was just great. Decent price, good quality card, speedy delivery. Very pleased.

2.0 out of 5 stars dirty bottle - not good for pills!, 28 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
couldn't find a way to contact the company directly but the bottle is filthy and the labels are scuffed. Receiving a bottle of tablets in a dirty bottle is extremely off putting. Luckily the bottle is sealed so I am taking my chances and assuming the contents are okay?!

2.0 out of 5 stars Dull and poorly written, 9 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The publicity for this book made me think it would be a drama largely based in the work place. It isn’t; it’s very much of the “domestic thriller” genre, so that’s something to note if you're unsure about buying it. Unfortunately, the author has used the theme to show the minutiae of family life in great detail. That sort of thing is rarely interesting to me, and I kept thinking it must serve some purpose, but by the end I realised it was simply filling space.

The book starts off well but moves into that mediocre territory very fast. Kathy, the main character and probably the one for whom I should feel sympathy, is under-developed. She also comes across as irritatingly over-emotional and I can't imagine such a wet blanket doing well in a competitive work place, which is what we are supposed to believe.

Heja, the sinister character, is a little more interesting, but her backstory is revealed in a painful plodding way. The writing is inconsistent; at best, it's just average, but at other times, adverbs feature heavily and are used to save the author depicting emotion through dialogue. The dialogue is stilted in some parts and hugely unnatural in others. I am taking into account that Heja’s English is her second language; it’s the parts that don’t involve her that feature the worst writing.

Overall, with no compelling characters and a style of writing that simply touches the surface and shows no depth, I found the book really dull and only finished it by skimming through chunks. Really, I just hate not finishing books, otherwise I would have given up on this.

There does seem to be a fashion for these sorts of domestic thrillers at the moment, but even if you like those, I would think twice before buying this. If you like good characterisation and sophisticated writing, you won’t find them here.

The Husband's Secret
The Husband's Secret
by Liane Moriarty
Edition: Paperback
Price: £3.80

2.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly dull and domestic, 1 July 2014
This review is from: The Husband's Secret (Paperback)
For a book with such an enticing title and such great endorsements, this doesn't deliver. It's not awful but the secret is obvious early on and it then goes on to execute a good deal of set up and almost no pay off. Lots of descriptions of domestic life which seemed utterly irrelevant. Also, a few characters who added little and could have been removed. If they author had stuck with those immediately involved, it would have been more interesting. I found myself skipping pages at the end because I don't really care about descriptions of an Easter parade.

On the plus side, some of Moriarty's writing is really beautiful and well-observed. However, I did feel that those skills were wasted a bit. Wondered if the book had been marketed wrongly and if that contributed to my disappointment. It's not a story where the secret is the opening of a Pandora's box - more a secret that leads to some discomfort for most of the book and only reaches a serious and unsatisfying conclusion at the very end.
