5.0 out of 5 stars Tales of everyday sadness, 11 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Tenth of December (Hardcover)
Saunders most recent collection has a melancholy muscle that fires each tale with a sadness at the decay and failing in everyday life. The fiction and near science fictions share similar themes and stylistic traits despite covering many different characters and scenarios, from an family struggling to keep up with the jones to an angry returning serviceman and a rule-bound kid, a similar vision of western culture appears, aspiration all yet failing, bombarding yet ever-remote. The tales range from the funny (My Chivalric Fiasco) to the tensely dramatic (The tenth of December) but each drives forward with dialogue or internal monologue revealing the gaps, lapses, failings and forlorn in our world. Essential.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tripe, 8 Jan. 2013
A load of partisan tosh that is practically unreadable and simply skips relevant details to avoid implicating he author in any IRA capacity. He 'simply' ends up fronting for them in prison after an 'unfortunate' discovery of guns (which his family seem to have an equally unfortunate history of hording.) The Protestants are all racists, the republicans all erudite wordsmiths and social liberals. An exercise in cognitive dissonance and mammy-lovin.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic of the form, 8 Nov. 2012

This review is from: You Are There (Hardcover)
The wonderful Are You There takes a typical Adele background type and places him in the centre of a surrealist folly touching on honesty, love, madness, possession and politics. The comic set pieces are masterful and Tardi's imagery striking. From the personal drama of the delusional central character to the hilarious Duck Soup political invasion the novel is both poignant and richly satirical. Highly different to the pot-boilers or war-nightmares in Fantagraphic's Tardi line this book is the most challenging but also the richest, standing with his bleak war-tales as the very finest in intelligent comic books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rotten dull plodding pretension, 8 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Dublinesque (Paperback)
An unputupable turgid novel of repeated observation, clunky ponderous musings and oh-so-ironic references than fall so flat they barely bother. A book for people who want to appear oh so cultured.

Copyright violation, legitimate licensed tshirts are available from forbidden planet and HMV. Shame on teamzad for ripping off the tiny uk comics industry.

Stuck with the need for a 19.5 UK volt sony adaptor this baby lasted a month. Not worth the cash so if your laptop needs an external PSU for 19.5 volts your choices are this (and maybe I was unlucky it lasted so little time but given the gray-market nature of the goods you just don't know) an official sony supplied one (90 quid) or a cheap multi-volt 3rd party PSU which will likely run at 19v rather than 19.5. You takes your picks, I got burnt but maybe that was a one off....

5.0 out of 5 stars Delayed but worth it, 19 Jun. 2012

This book was exceedingly late arriving in the UK, nearly two months from when it shipped from the publisher. However whether that was amazon.uk's fault or, somewhat likely, a customs issue is beyond knowing. However eventually it arrived and it is the most sumptuous edition yet. American reviewers have complained that the book is the B&W edition but UK customers are most loving of line-work than gaudy colours and Click is much better for being in its B&W form. Manara is all about the ink work, not the variety of colouring methods used over Clicks long evolution. The four stories have a much greater coherency when reduced to the purity of pen work and Click is clearly a masterwork. However it really is filth over every page so unless you are prepared for this very continental view of 'sex positive' feminism then probably best to head over to the Dark Horse 'regular' Manara series. Its not as if there isn't enough nudity in those.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pardon?, 7 Dec. 2011
You're charging 28 pounds to lift text that others (including myself) have written on wikipedia? Its a new and interesting paradigm alright, one called 'not paying for content'. Funnily enough the authors you cover in this book - Pat Mills, John Wagner, Alan Moore - all stood up against such nonsense in the 1980s and demanded proper respect for copyright.

Amazon should not lend its name to abuses of the creative commons copyright such as this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for a month, 19 Oct. 2011

This is a great product with a major flaw. The design is very comfy to use and has produced excellent results with SketchBook Pro, iThoughtsHD, Noterize, Notesplus and other similar programs - art wise it really moves the ipad up a notch in terms of sketching, layout preparation and accuracy. However - after 2 weeks a small tear had opened on the rubber tip, after another 2 weeks this tear was so substantial that I had to cease using the pen while awaiting Wacom shop to deliver replacement tips (20 pounds, up to 10 days delivery for 6 tips) which frankly is an extortionate rate and will send me looking for alternatives should the replacements tear after a similar short duration.

So frankly a lovely pen that has transformative effects on your ipad but one that carries not only a heavy investment cost but seemingly a steep up-keep cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars a change is as good as the best, 27 Nov. 2010
The Comics Journal doesn't get stocked by most comic book stores. The Comics Journal doesn't get stocked by most book stores. Indeed it is a wonder of economics that it exists at all. Who wants serious analysis of funny books and funny pondering s on serious books? Well you should. An astounding collection which maps the new direction for the (yeah right) twice a year Comics Journal with interviews covering everything from US editorial cartoons to UK boys action stalwart 2000AD. The Comics Journal is a joy to behold, an institution to treasure and a habit to foster. This edition features a series of conversations between creators in distinct fields who come from different generations. Each is lavishly illustrated in a beautifully designed tome. Enjoy.
