5.0 out of 5 stars Electonica Kandi at it's best, 26 May 2008
The freshest Kandi release I've heard in ages, so not to everyones taste ! I normally prefer HK's more chilled albums and Beach House for a more uptempoe groove. This live album mixed by Phil Faversham and Jim Breese is in a class of it's own. I love the electronica backing which has such strong influences of dance music through the decades. Disc 1's first six tracks are superb. This whole mix is predominantly an electro experince, that's quite mind blowing and the tempoe is right for either chilling out or getting you ready for a night out and a perfect intro to the other HK summer series Serve Chilled and Beach House.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stylish and Diverse, 22 Jan. 2008

German outfit Jazzanova are elite in downtempo rhythms and grooves, there own album Inbetween was awesome ! For 2002-2005 remixes the tempoe is more urban downtempoe R&B flavours with a bit of diversity as the West German outfit remix MAW/Roy Ayers old school vibes to Eddie Gayles jazz and Marcos Valle's latin to Calexico's indie style. But the whole jazzanova concept overhadowing mixes cover a seventies feel with the solid rhythm of Jazzanova and it's mellower than the more drum and based previous Jazzanova remixes, but just as good or even better. Don't pass this one by!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Cimemagic, 17 Jan. 2008

I 've been fascinated by Michael Nyman's soundtracks and films especially in the stylish futuristic Gataca, Carrington, and of course The Piano ,which will remain a classic into future centuries. For this collection it's the heartbreaking string symphonies merged with horns and brassy vintage jazz. I love the album especially disc 2 and can't get enough of the bittersweet neo classical themes. For those of you like me who want an insight in to Nyman's music without buying selected soundtrack's .This album, makes an excellent listen for Nyman , who I've heard described as one of Britains greatest composers, a collection like this is proof.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a compulsive read, 6 Oct. 2007
This review is from: Small Island (Paperback)
Being an offspring of British West Indian parents of The Windrush generation , I could somewhat relate to area's of this book via some of my parent's experiences. For Andrea Levy's Small Island I found it compulsive once it got going and Levy's post war prose brought echoes to me of JG Ballards Empire of the Sun and even reminded me in areas of Sebastian Faulks Birdsong , with such a vivid picture of post war Britains gloom and depression, I could almost feel the damp fog see the old black Morris's and see the shabby terraces. Written in the first person gave a good insight in to each character's minds .An opression and shattered dreams of a Great British empire were exposed. As was the blatant racism ,hatred and betrayal these immigrants suffered in the UK. Small island is a good read quite a tough 2nd world war story in which taboo interacial love merges with curiosity. This one was worth both prizes it received, and great to see a Comonwealth writer getting this critical acclaim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality summer beats, 27 July 2007
Beach House is one of my favourite in Kandi's series . For 69 the sound's unmistakably beach house's lighter dance grooves exploring this unique chilled mid to up tempoe trip through, laid back house, latin , jazzy and electronic baleiric pop flavours, without going in to overkill. This is more of a vintage Kandi collection for the old Kandi followers with favourite names such as MJ Cole, Miguel Migs,Physics also ,other poolside movers from Roachford and Hotchip The Hed Kandi team have brought out another winner for the summer pre- club .party warm up to go well with Served Chilled, for the after hours wind down

4.0 out of 5 stars New Directions in The Cinematic's late night moves, 29 May 2007

This review is from: Ma Fleur (Audio CD)
The Cinematic Orchestra are the Boss's of post 2am grooves ,with two awesome after hour loungers under there belts Motion and Everyday. Man with the Moviecamera I didn't like it was just re-recordings of cut's from Motion and Everyday. For the long awaited Ma Fleur J.Swincoe's taken a new direction . More tracks , less jazz and more vocals, mainstream ambient brit pop style additions. There's new vocalists Lou Rhodes and Patrick Watson. First two tracks I found the worse Patrick Watson's vocals a cross between Snow Patrol and Zero 7 Even Fontella Bass's vocal's didn't seem to warm me . By The third track Child song the Old Cinematic magic kicked in for a superbly mesmerising dream theme of beauty .There are some superb tracks on this new set that make up for the poorer tracks ,I prefer, the old jazzy late night smoky Cinematics of Motion in tracks such as the excellent bass and saxy title track Ma Fleur. There's a clever type of trilogy in three superb tracks Prelude, As Stars Fall and In To You which is basically the same track in three seperate formats a Michael Nyman style strings As Stars fall a cruel jazzy intrumental version and Into you featuring Patrick Watson's vocal electronica rendition.Ma Fleur is a new route for the Cinematics and the closing track Time and space is an excellent example of how Swincoe gets it right with vocalist Lou Rhodes, sounding like a cross between Bork and Emiliana Torrini in this down beat string based beatiful theme.Mixed feelings on the new sound not keen on Patrick Watson's vocals, but Cinematic Orchestra remain on top with what I'm sure is one of my top albums for 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LIKE IT!, 23 May 2007
This review is from: Serve Chilled (Audio CD)
I've not been keen on current Hed Kandi releases since Mark Doyle's departure and The Minitry of Sounds aquisition of the label, I preferred the label before it had grown to the" Now "! of Dance music, with a Kandi airline and guaranteed top twenty compilations , it's become to comercial for me , and have not enjoyed most of the compilations. For Serve chilled it's given a thumbs up of quality electronica, latin and soul flavours sundrenched downbeats. Disc 2 is more uptempoe , but still with enough ecelectic grooves to chill out to. There's elements of disco and glam. I must give full credits to the new succesful Hed Kandi Team on bringing out a quality collection of selective grooves This is a must to import to your Mp3 to take with you on your hols.

The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs

4.0 out of 5 stars More of Welsh's Dark Spaces, 14 April 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book has received poor reviews. I'm an Irvine Wesh fan , found it a good read . Welsh has neutralised the Scottish dialect as compared to his other novels , and introduced characters with obvious influences from those in his others such as Marabou Storks Strang and Filths Police Officer to create this dark diverse tale ,which has Welsh's usual elements of toilet humour alcoholism, drug addiction in this case further insites in to sexuality, identity and sex and depravity. In Master Chef's Welsh delves in to some of his most darkest spaces in a modern day perverse working class Jekyl and Hyde/ Dorian Gray in Edinburgh's Leith. I found it quite strong in his new area's of viewpoints, similies , metaphors, stream of conciousness. The Bedroom Secrets of The Master Chef is one of Welsh's best and blends horror humour with Welsh's obscene and bizarre. Don't listen to the negative reviews read it !

3.0 out of 5 stars Find it hard to slate a NU Cool album, 21 Mar. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been a fan of Hed Kandi and Nu Cool series since the first in the late 90's . What's best about this series is the diversity, from house dance to chill/R& B. I was suprised that on Mark Doyles departure , the new Kandi team brought out what I saw as one of Kandi's best album's last Year Nu cool 2006 .For the 2007 Nu Cool I've played it again and again but "NO" it's got none of the Kani magic.I found it a jagged inconsistant mess. Disc 1's highlite and highlite of the bunch is Japan's Jazztronics latin scratcher superb!, this is joined by half baked electro and some interesting disco. Soulstars are not a bad groove. Disc 2 which is allways the downtempoe chilled side of Nu Cool only's interest was Stockholm Cyclo , Jose Gonzalez One Self. All in all I find it hard to see that this album could receive such reviews , when I find it no where up to the quality of Nu Cool 2006.

Temptation

4.0 out of 5 stars Not his best but give it a chance!, 18 Feb. 2007
This review is from: Temptation (Hardcover)
Douglas Kennedy's 7th novel seems to have received quite poor reviews.I read this in a few days, like all of Kennedy's novel's Temptation's a page turner . Kennedy returns to the male character in the first person, in this case David Armitage a struggling scriptwriter gets the breakthrough to the US West Coast big time, writing a succesful sitcom. In the cut throat world of vitrial media, and his encounter with bilionaire tycoon Philip Fleck. It's well plotted with elements of his earlier novels Big Picture and The Job ,yet it does lack somewhat the originality of other Kennedy masterpieces, by the time I read the last page I felt as if I'd been cheated out of a few chapters.Condemed as superficial and poor by other critics, I disagree. Iput this in the same category as his earlier works The Dead Heart,Big Picture and The Job and it's probably the weakest of that group, as Kennedy's other novels covered female characters. But give temptation a chance it's not that bad.
