5.0 out of 5 stars Just great, 22 May 2009
This review is from: Beyond The Missouri Sky (Audio CD)
Metheny and Charlie Haden have been friend decades before the release of this project, which is actually their first duet album together. Since both of them are from some Missouri small towns, which explains the title of the album, they are most probably sharing quite similar warm feelings about their childhood, which you can feel when listening to the album. Metheny is impeccable and brings up completely acoustic guitar sound, Haden, of course, also plays in a perfect manner and the result is one great and deeply lyrical album.
In brief, If you are enjoying the lyrical, deep and a bit nostalgic sound that makes you dive deep into the blue, you will find this album to be a great acquisition for you

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, 22 May 2009

I would say that even if you are not a dedicated fan of Metheny/Mehldau music, this collaboration is something you'll have to hear. Ten cuts in total - three of them are written by Mehldau and seven - by Metheny. Only two of the cuts are supported by rhythm section (bass - Lary Grenadier & drums - Jeff Ballard); the other eight are duets. You will be able to recognize both man's compositional style. Although you will find a lot of upper tempo moments, I would say that the whole album feeling is predominantly lyrical, or if the word is not exact - you will have the infallible feeling of facing very sophisticated music, which flows trough you without any effort or tension.
I would say this is a must-have.

If you are a fan of Django Reinhardt music you will most probably like this album a lot. 7 of the 12 tracks are composed by Reinhardt. The entire album is offering mainly upper tempo compositions. The quality of the recording is very good and apart of the well know guitar sound of the trio, you will have the chance to enjoy the perfect job of Bernard Berkhout - clarinet.
Although I am not a great fan of the gypsy jazz music in general I enjoyed the album more than expected.
