The Gathering Storm [DVD] [2002]

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive, 31 Mar. 2009

When a cast can boast Vanessa Redgrave, Albert Finney , The Late , Great Ronnie Barker , Celia Imrie , Jim Broadbent and Derek Jacobi you know for certain that you are in for a real treat. It was a stunning & lavish piece that had great feeling for the period in which it was set. The shooting locations where impeccable as was the editing and the costumes. The script writer deserves a massive pat on the back ! The BBC produced an absolute gem here and no mistake !

As a great fan of Sir Winston Churchill I loved every minute of Albert Finney's inspired depiction of the UK's greatest Prime Minister. This is an excellent way to spend both ones money and ones viewing time. I recommend that people with a great respect for this fine nations history and who love quality drama to buy this from Amazon.CO.UK ASAP !

Albert Finney must be an excellent actor if he can excel as both Poirot ( Murder On The Orient Express) and as Churchill too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally stupid !, 31 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This just has me in fits of chuckles ! Michael Crawford is just excellent as Frank Spencer- Mr Crawford certainly has a flair for the kind of physical comedy that Raymond Allen had in mind when he wrote the screenplays. Even when you know what is going to happen or what Frank is going to say you still chortle. This series is just plain stupid but it is the perfect antidote to all the gloom & doom. Now I normally like intelligent humor a la Stephen Fry on QI but every so often it is nice not to have to think about what you are watching and just to roar with laughter.

The supporting cast are well chosen and I recommend this fine set of discs as a great way to chase the blues away! Amazon are selling it at a very good price after all !

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply superb !, 31 Mar. 2009
As Tina Turner might have put it :' Simply The Best !'

The acting is as ever superb and the drama is at a rapid tempo with the editors & costume designers having done a top notch job as usual. The fight scenes certainly grab ones attention and there are certainly plenty of sub plots bubbling along. I will miss this series enormously - roll on The Plan & Caprica !

It ends in a poignant & sombre way as we know that the survivors go their own ways never to see each-other again in many cases. I have found watching this very compelling indeed and during these final episodes we did not need any new revelations. There was more than enough drama & pace to be going on with !

Amazon are doing their customers proud by offering the grand finale of this pulsating series at a wonderful knock-down price. I am certainly pleased to have it on order !

5.0 out of 5 stars Dick Van Dyke strikes again !, 20 Feb. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If anything this is better than series one ! The cast rise to the challenge superbly ! Victoria Rowell is perfect as the ever demure & graceful Dr Bentley and Scott Baio is first class as the Italian-American charmer. Jack Stewart is one of the more complex & darker characters - his criminal past in hinted at when he tries to help Amanda get her money back from a con-man and he is superb at fishing around for clues. But he has a heart of gold and feels a real debt of loyalty to his good friend Dr Mark Sloan ( played superbly by Dick Van Dyke ) - this a golden thread running through season two of this fine drama series.

Barry Van Dyke is excellent as Lt Steve Sloan - as with Poirot in the early days 1989-1994 it made sense to have the same investigating officer every time. Barry can play the part of Mark Sloan's long suffering son very well on TV because he is Dick Van Dyke's son in real life - talk about acting with conviction ! Delores Hall is a great actress who wisely plays the part for laughs with just enough wry social comment and the personal chemistry between her & the rest of the cast is a joy to behold.

Michael Tucci plays the part of the hapless Norman Briggs very well indeed. Although initially set up as the penny-pinching bogeyman we do discover that he has done much good work in the past and really does care about other people. Norm is not just a single dimensional idiot of a character- far from it ! I feel sorry for Norm & Delores who try in vain to get Dr Sloan to focus on hospital paperwork rather than fighting crime.

This part plays to Dick Van Dyke's musical hall acting skills and as such is a joy to behold. I know that the plot-lines do retread the past successes of other American detective dramas like Quincy , Murder She Wrote , Colombo , Perry Mason and even Kojak but the acting is so great that it really does not matter. The episode about vampires will certainly appeal to fans of Bram Stoker & Arthur Conan-Doyle - it is one of the darker , sombre and more powerful installments of season two. But like previous famous American TV sleuths Dr Sloan is filled with compassion & a desire to do justice as well as being a wise person.

I have really enjoyed this great series and am looking forward very much to future DVD releases ! Well done Amazon for offering such excellent retro- TV classics such as Diagnosis Murder at a nice low price. This set will only enhance any DVD collection for any discerning viewer ! Don't delay - buy today !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great news for Oxford !, 8 Feb. 2009
Colin Dexter did the fair City of Oxford such a massive favor by writing the Inspector Morse novels and then helping to ensure that those characters went on to star in thirty -three top notch episodes. As an Oxford resident I am delighted to see the glories of my home City displayed on-screen. The twists & turns keep one perplexed ( if you have not seen them umpteen times like I have !) or even if you are word perfect you can enjoy the brilliant acting performances contained in these well scripted episodes. Martin Clunes, Zoe Wanamaker , Richard Briers , Jeffery Palmer , Patricia Hodge , Betty Marsden & Diane Fletcher are but a sample of the great acting talent seen in this stunning detective drama.

But the top three are of course the much missed John Thaw as Inspector Morse , Kevin Whately as Sgt Lewis and the great James Grout as the gruff but lovable Supt Strange. Kevin Whately must have done something right as Lewis as he is now back playing the part in his own successor series ! Sgt Lewis is the loyal sidekick - very much in the Watson/Hastings tradition. Kevin Whately does play the part really well and gels perfectly with John Thaw. Morse as a character has more depth & substance to him than many might think with his romantic love of poetry, paintings , opera and of course fine wines & whiskey. He is not just a cardboard cut out old grump policeman - far from it !

I must once again compliment the way in which the viewer is privileged to see just what a splendid place Oxford is. One can readily appreciate its history , architecture and academic standing. John Thaw is much missed - but I am very grateful to him for having played Morse so well and to have thus helped to put a great City on the map. That is a fine legacy and one that Colin Dexter & co must be well pleased with.

I have chosen not to comment too much on specific episodes so as not to detract from other peoples enjoyment if they have not seen them before as some suspense does help one derive pleasure from seeing a detective drama for the first time ( as one is on the edge of ones seat wondering who did the crime !). Amazon are offering this excellent set of discs at a very competitive price. They represent a very wise purchase indeed and will only enhance the discerning customers DVD collection !

5.0 out of 5 stars The excellence that I grew up with !, 8 Feb. 2009
Ten out of ten George Lucas ! The story-lines where well written , the acting superb and the special effects truly groundbreaking to say the least ! I must have watched these movies shed-loads of times during my childhood and into my early teens ! Even now I do pop one on and enjoy this excellent sci-fi. I know it word for word but it still works for me ! The theme tune is a great cult classic.

I bet that George Lucas did not know the vast money creating science fiction genre that he ushered in when A New Hope got filmed in 1977. He gave us the great on-screen villain in Darth Vader, the ultimate movie love interest in Princess Leia , the ever bashful hero in Luke Skywalker , the lovable rogues Han & Chewie , the camp comic distractions known as Master Yoda , C-Threepio and R2-D2 as well as classic performances from established English actors Alec Guiness & Peter Cushing. The filming locations are very well chosen.

I am sure that we are all pleased at Amazon offering this gem of a cinematic collection at such a fair price. If you want to revisit the glories of science fiction at its best then buying this DVD set from Amazon is surely a great way to ensure quality entertainment at home !

By the way if you like the acting of Carrie Fisher then she also does a great job in Appointment With Death opposite Sir Peter Ustinov which Amazon wisely sell at a very low price. Watching one of the original Star Wars movies and then Ustinov's last outing as Hercule Poirot just shows what a versatile actress Carrie Fisher is !

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb series, 3 Feb. 2009
This is a fine series - lovely old England ! It is great seeing Kent on-screen being as it is The Garden of England ! Pam Ferris , David Jason and Catherine Zeta-Jones are outstanding ! I love the moral dimension about how stupid high taxation is. If you levy too much tax then people will do a Pa Larkin and just dodge it if they can. If they had a hard line on taxes then no fruit would have been picked and less wealth creation would take place. All would lose out ! I admire the Larkin's independence from the state , hard-work , enterprise and for showing rural South-Eastern England in the positive light that it deserves to be.It is right that Ma & Pa get married in the end and the episodes in France are a particular joy. All the comic misunderstandings are very funny indeed. The scripting is very good indeed and as I have already alluded the casting decisions are spot on. It is pleasing to see family life being displayed in such a loving way.

This is a series with bite as there is pronounced social comment , pathos and battles against injustice amid the comedic moments. Amazon as ever deserve the credit for offering an outstanding series at an extremely fair price. Fans of quality television have a great chance to add to their collection by buying this classic from Amazon who are the best on-line retailer.

5.0 out of 5 stars The PC mob will not like this !, 3 Feb. 2009

It is lovely to see Dandy Nichols again with Warren Mitchell in this great Johnie Speight classic. Alf is just as mad as ever with his potty ranting & raving and seeing this sitcom being released on DVD is a great triumph for freedom of speech. This series has one in fits of laughter and my advice to any Guardian readers is that if they dislike this sitcom then don't watch it ! Mr Speight wrote an utter gem - the only problem was that the BBC thought that they where being very clever by depicting a bigot as stupid. The thing is a not inconsiderable number of people seemed to sympathize with what Alf was saying and that is why its ratings got so high. If you fancy a laugh and a joke on a trip down memory lane then buying Season One of In Sickness & In Health from Amazon at such a low price surely makes sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet more laughs !, 3 Feb. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I know that some people say that David Croft let his sitcoms run for too long & that they became stale , predictable etc but if those critics had been listened to then future generations would have missed out ! People now & in the future would have had less Dad's Army, less Allo Allo !, Less It Ain't Half Hot Mum and fewer Hi de Hi episodes to buy from that great on-line retailer Amazon at a low price.

The banter etc in Seasons Eight & Nine still makes one laugh such is the high quality of the writing & acting. I love the scenes between Herr Flick and his sidekick and the 'stupid woman' comic moments between Renee & Edith - they are still as funny in the later seasons as is the case earlier on in the series. Richard Marner still shines as does Arthur Bostrom and Kenneth Connor and Vicki Michelle always delight viewers of this great British sitcom. Watching this you know that it is winding down - but thanks to that excellent fellow Mr Croft there are many giggles to have should you buy this from Amazon at such a low price !

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done Kevin Spacey & John Hurt !, 3 Feb. 2009

This review is from: Recount (HBO Films) [DVD] (DVD)
This is great ! I bet James Baker never thought that he would be so expertly depicted on screen ! The twists and turns keep the viewer captivated to say the least. Kevin Spacey & John Hurt are very good indeed and this effort is a compelling piece of political drama that makes House of Cards look like Yes Minister ! The reason I say that is not a lack of respect for either the late Paul Eddington or the late Ian Richardson - far from it ! They played their parts in those shows superbly. Recount is better because it is based on what really happened and that gives it for obvious reasons a more realistic cutting contemporary edge. All the legal antics do not obscure the very real human drama as the Two-Americas Democrat ( metro) and Republican ( retro ) slug it out. One can see that Al Gore was unfairly treated - but if he had lost the popular vote but got 270 or more on the electoral college would he have minded - I doubt it ! But equally George W Bush lost the popular vote by about 500,000 and so did not really have a mandate to do much of what he did in his first term. The TV networks kept calling Florida for Gore while knowing that Bush was ahead in that state - one wonders if they where trying to depress the GOP vote to save Gore from losing this election ? But what did stink was the courts ordering recounts then suspending them and then saying they could not complete them in time while seeing people being blocked from voting by having a criminal record ascribed to them when they had not broken the law once. That was very unfair to say the least ! However trying to disenfranchise the military vote was a disgrace on the part of the Democrats - as if their defense cuts under Clinton where not enough of an insult.

One thing is clear that the biggest loser of the Florida recount was Saddam Hussein. Whatever you thought about the Iraq War the moment that things where finally sorted out in that swing state the Iraqi Dictator was on borrowed time. This film proves that politics is a dirty business and that neither side comes out of the proceedings looking very good given the tactics that they resorted to and the hypocrisy that they came out with. To say it was ordinary folk demanding an end to the recounts was nonsense - the GOP just stirred up a few of their own people to create that false impression.

Recount is expertly written and the cast rise to an awesome challenge but to perfection. The locations & filming are spot on. Amazon as per-usual are treating their customers very well by offering to deliver it to your door for less than the recommended retail price.
