4.0 out of 5 stars Rather funny stuff, 23 May 2009
For John Inman fans this will be a joy to behold. I had forgotten this little comic gem and so had quite a few laughs watching it. John Inman is pretty restrained compared with his Are You Being Served performances - it is Miriam Margolyes who goes totally off her head. Ruth Lenska is fine as the boss to John Inman's male secretary and you get many pleasing comic scenarios to help pass the time. This show is not the strongest of sitcoms and the fact it only lasted one series should come as no great surprise. Neither has it aged that well being a real product of its time. But there are worse ways to pass the time than in the comic company of the late great John Inman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 23 May 2009
This review is from: Terry & June: Series 9 [DVD] (DVD)
It is such a shame that this fine sitcom had to end when series nine was such a hoot. The writers could still make us chuckle and the cast where still delivering the lines with the necessary aplomb. To those who say that it was repetitive all I would interject & say is that as life is pretty repetitive for most people comedy must reflect that to have any credibility. Tony Hancock was right about comedy based on truth.

I love the performances of the late Terry Scott and June Whitfield - they had gelled so well by this point that you cannot believe that the BBC where mad enough to scrap a winning program. Amazon are offering this series for a great price and there are many laughs to be had from viewing it. So don't delay - buy today !

Frank Langella is an excellent Nixon - he captures the look , mannerisms and voice superbly. Michael Sheen does a characteristically fine job - he is a great character actor and no mistake. This film is a compelling tale of how those great historic interviews came about - the build up is a good idea so that those not around at the time can see the events of the interviews in the proper context. Sheen as Frost is portrayed as the classic British underdog who has to struggle to a) get the interviews done at all and b) to get Nixon to give the replies that he wants.

The net result of this film seems to be that we learn how David Frosts career really took off while being reminded why although a complex character Nixon was still persona non grata after these interviews.

The script writers manage to make this pretty dramatic & watchable stuff and the rest of the cast certainly give it a go. I can't comment on its accuracy as I was not around in 1977 and have never seen the proper interviews. But I will certainly say this - there are worse ways to pass two hours than watching this interesting movie. It is worth buying to be sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet, 17 May 2009
This review is from: Forever (Audio CD)
Ah poor sweet lovely Vicki Brown just left us far too early in 1991. She was so nice and such a passionate & intense performer who brought real meaning to all that she sang. The marvelous songs on this fine album are a timeless reminder of just how superb a singer she was. You get a real flavor of the brilliance of Joe Brown's dearly departed late wife when listening to this music. Her performances sometimes mournful sometimes flamboyant always had great depth and character. If dear Vicki Brown was still around now she could have been a timeless golden oldie like the wonderful Elaine Paige. To Vicki Brown fans this will remind them why so many continue to admire her work. Nearly twenty years after her tragically untimely demise she is still enormously missed by many people.

I cannot praise this product enough and recommend it to lovers of great music everywhere ! Well done to Amazon for selling it at such a good price! Don't delay - buy today !

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad idea !, 5 April 2009
This review is from: Carry On Columbus (DVD) (DVD)
They made this too late ! It is a shame that they could not have just ended it with Carry On Again Nurse (1979), Carry On Down Under (1980) and Carry On Dallas (1981). At least Vince Powell , Norman Huddis and Dave Freeman could have written some good scripts and we could have enjoyed performances from the majority of the Carry On team who where still alive then.

The trouble is that it is not similar enough to the original series as those who had been in the films and who where still alive are not used to any great extent. Patsy Rowlands , Julian Holloway, Windsor Davies , Peter Jones , Joan Sims , Bernard Bresslaw , Barbara Windsor , Melvyn Hayes , Kenneth Connor , Suzanne Danielle , Kenneth Cope , Frank Thornton and Bill Owen could have all shone in this as could say Bob Monkhouse.

I also think that Norman Huddis could have watched all the serious Columbus movies and fashioned a high class bit of screenplay. Jim Dale & Jack Douglas , June Whitfield , Bernard Cribbens , Peter Gilmore , Jon Pertwee and Lesley Philips try their best. Their presence is all that stops me switching off half way through.

As it is most of the new team just have not got a clue about how to play Carry On comedy and Dave Freeman script is just a rehash of his & Mr Rothwell's past triumphs with a load of offensive dross chucked in. Mr Freeman was not given the time to do a good job and it is a shame that Frankie Howerd died and that Terry Scott was too ill to star in this film.

The costumes are pretty lavish but the editing is pathetic. I feel very sorry for Peter Rogers & Gerald Thomas that they fine time working together producing comic movies had to end in such a fiasco. The plot is not that strong and all in all I think that either they should have made it in 1982 ( after Again Nurse , Down Under and Dallas revived the Carry On's box office pulling power) or made more of an effort in 1992.

This movie reads like a turgid parody of the Carry On's and it belongs on the list of failed entries in the series. It is a modernized version of Carry On Jack ( that did not make me laugh to start with) and as such it is not surprising that you can no longer buy new copies of it first hand in the UK.

Only watch this sorry excuse for a film if your curiosity gets the better of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very clever stuff !, 1 April 2009
This review is from: Columbo Season 9 [DVD] (DVD)
It was such a great detective series ! Seeing who had done the murder at the start and thus knowing who had done it is interesting because then our hero has to pin it on someone who while supposedly helping Columbo is in fact leading the dogged detective on a merry dance. You get a good number of celebrities cropping up and Peter Falk does play the part in a very charming and engaging way with his dirty old mac and sense of duty making the performance a joy to behold.

Although an American production it is nice drawing-room type fare that can help pass a wet Sunday afternoon just nicely. It is gentler stuff than Kojak but has a bit more grit than say Murder She Wrote or Diagnosis Murder. The scripts are very cleverly written and it is always interesting to see what mistake led to the murderer being found out.

Columbo is smarter than people think and killers underestimate him at their peril. Amazon are selling this for a great price and this series deserves to be better regarded than it is in some quarters. I recommend this superb set of DVD's as a fine addition to a collection for any fan of top notch detective fiction.

For anyone wanting a Bush bashing Michael Moore type movie then this fair minded film is not for you ! The people behind this interesting film have done right by open-minded viewers as it shows how George W Bush became the man that he is. He had a struggle with drink & not being able to hold down a job while having to compete with his brother Jeb for their Dad's affection. The cast do an excellent job depicting Rumsfeld , Cheney , Rice et al and Josh Brolin just has George W Bush to a tee.

It is tragic that a man who set out to do good ended up with such problems - the well written script makes this very clear. There is much pathos & drama but with just enough wry humor to help things along. The editing is clever as it shows recent events of the Bush presidency and things from his past thus showing how he ended up being the man he is and why he did what he did. It could have been a mish-mash but thanks to the editors skill the movie flows very well indeed.

For someone who wants to understand the Bush presidency and the man himself this is not a bad place to start.Amazon are selling this for a good price and so is a worthy addition to a drama lovers DVD collection.

Well I'm blessed ! As a fan of Philip Jackson I am delighted by his first class depiction of Alfred Roberts and Oliver Ford-Davis shines in his role as Tory Vice-Chairman for candidates.

Andrea Riseborough however steals the show as a rather attractive & passionate younger Margaret Thatcher. It shows her character , grit and capacity for reinvention and taking advice that even in youth she could take on the male establishment of the Conservative Party and win to boot !

The script writer certainly wrote an absolute gem and this a classy feature length show does enough to keep you pleasantly entertained throughout its duration. I admire the high quality cast as well as the lavish feel of this show. Amazon are doing us all proud by offering this superb historical drama at such a fair price.

I am looking forward to Lindsey Duncan's TV Movie Margaret being out on DVD !

David Morrisey is so plausible as Gordon Brown it is astonishing ! Michael Sheen is truly a great character actor who can play David Frost , Kenneth Williams , Tony Blair and now Brian Clough ! He plays Blair to perfection ! It is the compelling tale of how Blair and Brown went from being office sharing buddies to rivals in Westminster's long running feud AKA soap opera. It is interesting to see the UK's political history from 1983 ( when they both entered Parliament ) to 1994 ( when the deal was done so to speak) from a Labour Party perspective. The writers have it pretty much spot on and when I was watching it I must admit that the time flew by! I really enjoyed it ! The other cast members do a fine job and the real -life footage helps remind us that it is a factual drama. Thanks to the superior quality of the editing it flows superbly !

Amazon are selling it at a very reasonable price so if this kind of subject matter is your cup of tea then buying it from that fine on-line retailer is a good idea. Don't delay - buy it from Amazon today !

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Watchable, 31 Mar. 2009

This was very watchable fare indeed. Sylvia Syms was eminently convincing as Margaret Thatcher. It rather read like a Greek tragedy where the heroine has no idea about how real the danger is until it is too late. This piece shows how our beloved former Prime Minister lost touch with reality , made bad decisions ( making Geoffry Howe Leader of the House, delaying ERM membership ,bringing in the Poll Tax etc) and thus destroyed her government. It amazed me how she could leave Peter Morrison in charge of her first ballot campaign while she sauntered off to Paris. John Wakeham , Mr Garel - Jones and Richard Ryder could have run a decent effort on the first ballot and seen off Heseltine. As it was made in 1991 it captures the period in which it was set flawlessly.

This drama reminds us of how Margaret Thatcher signed her own political death warrant. It is a well written , factual TV show that conveys the drama of what went on in the Autumn/Winter of 1990. The acting is very good as is the editing. Whether you are a political historian , a fan of excellent drama or both this is a DVD for you. Amazon are selling it at a great price after all !

It is a fair minded program that captures both the great strengths of Margaret Thatcher and her weaknesses too. So for objective viewers it is a worthwhile purchase.
