5.0 out of 5 stars A superb album, 28 Mar 2010
This review is from: Joy - The Best Of (Audio CD)
This was a step on the road towards The New London Chorale and European Sound Projects. You have on this CD updated versions and deconstructions of some great classical music by the likes of Beethoven and Bach. When out on vinyl in 1972 in the UK it was less impactive than in the Netherlands.Again this was a hint about what the future held for Tom Parker - as his work has mainly been a success with Dutch audiences. Also the New London Chorale went on to do albums based on Bach and Beethoven with Tom Parker revisiting some of what was on this album.

So this album is interesting as it showed that Tom Parker was a man with the potential to get the gist of timeless classical music across to a modern audience.Jesus Joy of Man's Desiring is very lively indeed and as such well worth a listen. This and the Beethoven reworking alone make this album a worthy addition to a persons collection. It is a must for fans of the New London Chorale who are interested to know how Tom Parker started to get the ideas together that led to their favorite group getting going.

If you love good music for a fair price then this is for you ! Don't delay - buy it from Amazon today !

5.0 out of 5 stars Both excellent dramas, 28 Mar 2010
Well what can I say ?You get a comedic account of the great woman's eventual election to Parliament. Then you get a depiction of the self-inflicted Greek tragedy that was her political demise. The acting in both programs is top notch and it is clear that the script writers know their stuff.Amazon are as ever offering great drama at a great price and if you want quality stuff to watch then this is for you.

Both Thatcher dramas are worth a look and no mistake !

5.0 out of 5 stars Fills in the gaps perfectly !, 26 Mar 2010
All the unresolved issues from the series are sorted out here. You see things from the Cylons perspective and plenty of events that happened in the original mini-series are explained rather neatly. All our favorite characters are all present and correct. The actors play their parts very well- they are having a ball knowing that it is the final bite of the BSG cherry and so go out on a high. The heavy arc story-lines and special effects are as ever an asset. You get the usual ethical problems and discussion of them seems like an allegory of some of the pressing issues of our own time.

It is a joy to see the story retold from the villains point of view as the bad guys are often more interesting than the goodies. It is interesting to know why the baddies end up bad so to speak.

If you like science fiction of high quality but want to pay a competitive price then buying this from Amazon sounds like a logical move to me.So don't delay -order today !

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better - could be worse....., 26 Mar 2010
It is interesting to see how the Cylons got started and how humanity effectively caused its own downfall. The cast are all unknowns to me but seemed to get into their parts with aplomb. The sordid nightclub referred to was a bit excessive but I guess what went on in there was needed to show how a degenerate human race was bringing down apparently divine retribution on its head. You get the role of religion and terrorism being center stage and so this series is perhaps allegorical about our own time when you consider the War on Terror. It is curious how Mary Shelley's Frankenstein gets reworked into a Battlestar Galactica prequel whereby a genius tries to create a human being only to cause mayhem.

This is a worthy successor to Battlestar Galactica as you get heavy arc stories with plenty of ethical issues being touched upon. You even get Mafia types conducting vendettas and a Perry Mason type lawyer trying to do the right thing.

So while not being brilliant it could have been worse. As with things like this you often need a few more episodes to properly get used to the characters and scenarios etc.It took me a while to get used to the new Battlestar Galactia and I guess the same is true of the prequel.

If you are a curious sci-fi fan then this is the DVD for you- which Amazon are selling for a very competitive price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dallas Gets A Face-Lift !, 25 Mar 2010
Well I know that the Dallas cast often face mickey taking over face-lifts - but for once the series got a face-lift instead !

We get new characters aplenty,a few sad farewells and one brief return.Just as Jeremy Wendell is dethroned Cliff's old flame Afton reappears. JR & Bobby both have new women in their lives. How JR gets wed and then finally falls for his blushing new wife is a tale both touching and comic.Sue Ellen is still around busy plotting her revenge on JR via the movie industry. We learn what happened with Pam and Lucy is back for a series. It is nice to see Ray Krabbes for a few episodes and his departure for Europe is touching.George Kennedy appears as Carter MacKay -JR's brand new nemesis who runs West-Star Oil.There is a sad moral tale about the perils of drugs there as well.

Seeing JR cropping up in a lap dancing club should not amaze anyone either !

So there is plenty of plots & subplots bubbling away to keep us on the edge of our seats.Fresh faces and new scenarios revitalize Dallas that had been going for roughly a decade by this stage. The writers pull a few great rabbits out of the hat and the actors are fine.As ever the old stagers such of Howard Keel and Barbara Bel Geddes steal the show.

This is well worth buying. As a series it captures both the greed and optimism of the 1980's.Amazon are selling it for a very fair price - don't delay buy today !

5.0 out of 5 stars Stirring stuff from Tom Parker !, 21 Mar 2010
This review is from: Young Mendelssohn (Audio CD)
Well didn't they do well ! Lance Ellington,Amy Vanemeenen and Gordon Neville join up with newcomer Jackie Rawe to produce another fine addition to The Tom Parker Project. If you find classical music a little to heavy but pop stuff a bit too vacuous then this is for you ! The New London Chorale are a great compromise formula that should be a joy for easy-listening fans everywhere.

Mendelssohn's works get a 21st Century face-lift and the results are delightfully pleasing. If you have had a rotten day or just need to relax then putting this album on will give you plenty of solace enabling you to unwind and look at life in a more measured way.

Tom Parker and the gang have done really well. And it is a pity that Lance Ellington was about to leave and that Janet Mooney had just done so.The other tragedy is just how many New London Chorale albums have been discontinued and that one has to buy second hand. The New London Chorale are still going - but only just.

Buying this album might help them to get going if the powers that be feel that they are a viable entity that can generate sales and profits.

At this very fair price I cannot recommend this fine album too highly. You can own some excellent music and help keep a superb group going as well.

So don't delay- buy this from Amazon today !

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Thatcher:The Final Days, 28 Feb 2010
This review is from: Margaret [DVD] (DVD)
This is a stunning piece of television to say the least ! Ian McDiarmand,James Fox and Philip Jackson where especially good. But honors must go to Lindsay Duncan for a stellar performance as the great Iron Lady.It told the dramatic story of Margaret Thatcher's dethronement by her own Party. The locations, filming and editing where 100% perfect and there was a great sense of dramatic tension throughout. The script writer did a superb job telling this compelling tale.

Lindsay Duncan was an ironic choice for the role given her views on our first woman PM but she has given the character a multi-faceted portrayal that avoids being a shrill, comedic parody.Robert Hardy does a fine job as Lord Whitelaw - a distinguished actor playing a distinguished politician.

So this is a great TV movie that Amazon are offering for a very fair price indeed. You do not need to be a student of political history to want to buy this.I have been waiting for this to be out on general release and am pleased that it is on general release. So don't delay - buy today !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great comedy for all politicos !, 8 Dec 2009
Johnathan Lynn & Sir Antony Jay wrote a great master piece that affectionately debunks the civil service and the political class. To say that this is sharp satire would be an understatement and it is good to be reminded of just what excellent actors the late Nigel Hawthorne & the dearly departed Paul Eddington really where. There is not the space in this review to do the writing and all the actors involved in this enterprise justice. There are many delicious twists & turns as things verge on being a comic parody of Machiavelli himself. The tongue twisting statements of Sir Humphrey and dear Bernard's nervous stammering a joy to behold as are Jim Hackers attempts to liken himself to Sir Winston Churchill.Derek Fowlds is great value as Bernard Woolley and often steals the show with his understated comic performances.

I could go on but I do not wish to bore people who could recite them word for word as I could. But nor do I wish to ruin the surprise for those who have not watched this excellent series before or who have not seen it for a while.

Amazon are offering this set at an ultra competitive price and if you have an interest in politics but like the lighter side of life then this is a great purchase to make ! Don't delay buy this brilliant comedy from Amazon today !

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genius, 4 Nov 2009
This a great series ! We see the late great Leo McKern bringing to life the great legal character invented by that magnificent writer Jon Mortimer himself sadly deceased.Rumpole is a larger than life defender of social justice. The part is played so that we get from Leo McKern's performances the complexity of Rumpole's personality. The wry humor and pathos comes very much to the fore as does Rumpoles love-hate relationship with his wife Hilda. The stories flow very well as the editing has been competently done. There are plenty are twists and turns in what could be seen as a British parody of Perry Mason - much as Carry On Texas would have been a British version of US Super-Soap Dallas.

The acting is very good stuff indeed as you sometimes get James Grout as a judge or Liz Fraser running a hotel.Peter Sallis crops up in one episode in Norman Clegg mode and Peter Bowels is great as the suave head of chambers.I love this series and getting it for less than one third of the recommended retail price from Amazon is a great idea. The clever plot-lines should certainly keep the viewer interested !

Don't delay - buy today !

5.0 out of 5 stars High Class Stuff !, 4 July 2009
This is ideal for fans of Hi de Hi & Jeeves & Wooster as this fine comedy drama has elements of both in abundance. I love the poignant & gritty aspects of this as there is real pathos amid the innuendo & camp silliness. The comic misunderstandings between those above & below stairs are a joy to behold. There are just so many quality comic actors & actresses in this enjoyable series and the writing gets better as things go on.

I hardly know which acting performances to praise as there is an embarressment of riches in this respect. As a comic deconstruction of the 1920's class system this top quality program excels. I have kept it vague so as not to ruin things for those who have either not seen this before and/or to avoid boring those who know it inside out. Suffice to say that Amazon are as ever doing their customers proud by selling a top notch DVD at a very low price and should be commended for doing so.

Don't delay buy today ! A few episodes of this excellent TV show and some of the great stars from Hi de Hi , Dad's Army , Allo Allo & It Ain't Half Hot Mum will ensure that the time flies. Which it does when you are having fun !
