This was the best detective story I have read for a long time. The plot unfolded gradually with sub- plots especially the one relating to the main detective's marriage (which by the way was left unclarified to be resolved perhaps in the next book which I gather is on the way) and, although the denouement was perhaps predictable, it still held my attention until the very end

My comments on Qiuirke Mysteries Books 1 and 2 apply equally to this one. I thoroughly enjoyed all three of them and repeat my recommendation that they be read in sequence as the same chapters reappear in all three. Excellent reads

Extremely well written. Interesting and well drawn characters. I have now read all the Quirke books but rather stupidly not in the order in which they were written. I would strongly recommend new readers to read them in sequence although they make good reading as stand alone volumes. Atmospheric, quite slow in pace but the writing in the 'slow bits' is so good that my attention and interest never flagged. For those who don't know Quirke is a Dublin pathologist with a serious drink problem, a weakness for the ladies and, above all, an insatiable curiosity which gets him into all sorts of trouble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always anticipated, never disappointed, 14 April 2014

I look forward every year to the arrival of the Playfair Annual. Summer is nearly here and I shall be off to various county grounds armed with this remarkable compendium of cricket statistics. They seem to pack more in each year and still succeed in doing so in this little volume which you can slip easily into your pocket

I find this a very difficult book to review.. The first few chapters were boring but then I became quite engrossed in the middle section. The final chapters , which seemed to go on and on, were, I thought rather ridiculous. I shall not be rushing back to this author.

Not one of Connelly's best I thought, but still interesting and entertaining as all his Mickey Haller books are although I still prefer Bosch.

I really liked this. An interesting and original story line and some fascinating insights, presumably accurate, into life in France during the occupation

Perhaps I didn't give it a fair chance -hence two stars rather than one - but I gave up after about 50 pages. I was simply bored by it

I don't know why I have never heard about this book. I found it quite fascinating - a bit far fetched perhaps but none the worse for that. I have read other Robert Goddard books and enjoyed them all - he is a versatile writer - but this is the best I have read so far although I think it may have been his first
