I first read this in my teens, some 70 years ago, and loved it for its colourful depiction of 15th. Century life; the exciting adventures; the insights into artistic and clerical; and above all, the tender account of true love.
Since then, I have re-read it several times, the last time about ten years ago. I have recently.been reading Victorian novels, and was prompted to look again at the old favourite. It still casts its spell. It remains one of the best ever historical novels, and unique in the Victorian canon.

The Poldark saga is consistently gripping, and beautifully written. The varied cast of characters is strongly delineated and set in a thoroughly convincing historical milieu. The evocation of the sea, the landscape, and the weather is especially beguiling.
I urge readers to start with volume one, and follow on. You will not be disappointed.

The title of this collection is misleading; they are not by any means all colour paintings. Many of them are black and white drawings. Of course, there are still many fine colour paintings included, but the title does seem a little disingenuous.
Shishkin is all about trees, and there is much to enjoy here, particularly those depicting woodland in its natural state; e.g. Backwood 1872, and Birch Grove 1875.
I have no interest in the paintings of people and buildings, or the black and white drawings.
All in all, a collection of moderate interest, not to be compared to Volkov or Levitan.

This is a top quality piece of kit: easy to set up, and works beautifully. It gives access to a world of entertainment, much of which is included with Prime. If you are wondering whether to take the plunge, don't hesitate. You will not be disappointed.

I have several Shmoop guides and have found them a worthwhile enhancement of my pleasure in reading the classics. Those studying for an exam would need greater depth, at greater expense, but for my less ambitious purposes, they are ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nourishment for Culture Vultures., 21 Feb. 2015

When reading the classics, I like to get background information and some guidance regarding the literary qualities of the world, enough to enhance my understanding, and hence enjoyment, of the work, without going into great depth. After all, I am not taking an exam, I am reading for pleasure, and to broaden my cultural horizons. The Shmoop guides fulfil this aim perfectly, and at an affordable price.

A great read, combining humour and thrilling action. I particularly like the manner of speech of the various characters, especially the bad guys. It is more formal than the modern way, and accords well with written records of nineteenth-century speech patterns. This adds greatly to the feeling of authenticity.
The book is quite short; there is no wasted verbiage, the narrative sweeps the reader along to make a very satisfying experience.

This is an entertaining collection, just right for browsing at odd times during the day. Along with Hitchens' Portable Atheist, I use it to keep my anti-faith fresh, between more substantial works. Recommended.

This is a waste of good reading time, in fact, I gave up half way through. The descriptions of landscape and natural events are verbose and absurdly over the top, and the hero plays Bach on his harmonica, sings Mozart opera, and quotes classical literature. Forget it.
